Main cast:
Meryl Streep Julianne-Moore Nicole Kidman Ed Harris
A story of intertwined lives, within Virginia Wood's mind during the 20th century. Very rich, emotional and a worthwhile watch.
The main characters are 3 strong women, who have to each battle with unhappy lives - Kidman has to stay alive because of her husband and his expectations, Moore has to stay alive because of her son, Streep is the only one not on suicide watch who actually lives to make her dying husband (Harris) happy in his final days, but she is fairly unhinged nonetheless (very good at playing unhinged) so this links in with the other 2 women.
Very well acted, each character showing depth and stregth for the times (different stages of the 20th century - Kidman early 20's, Moore 50 or 60's, Streep 90's). Also, Streep's part allows an insight to dealing with a partner who has AIDS, whilst also showing how the AIDS sufferer feels, a viewpoint sometimes lacking in films that try to show an insight into this subject-matter (excluding Philadelphia and more recent films). However, she is not the strongest actress in this and indeed, I have never rated her much in anything until this film, I really don't know what it is about her!
My only comment would be the same one others have made - it is not explained why each character has lesbian tendencies, I can only imagine it stems from Mrs Dalloway and is then reflected in each character. But maybe it alludes to the fact that in those times they couldn't relate to the men in their lives, as relationships were closer between women, and therefore more trust, more friendship, more emotional support?
Moore is fantastic at playing this type of part, however I don't think it's her strongest (see Magnolia - which I've also reviewed - Boogie Nights), and in the end she seems quite weak compared to the other 2 feisty characters.
Nicole Kidman steals the show as far as I am concerned and it's the first time I have taken her seriously as an actress, I didn't even know it was her when I watched this film for the first time (it was a restaurant in Thailand, I only knew the title of the film and had not seen trailers).
I hope you enjoy this and stick through the seemingly complex plot - it's worth it ;o)

Advantages: The DVD has endless special features. The acting is spectacular. Disadvantages: The films ends with a need to know more about what happened; this could be part of the mystery.
