the Pops, as female dancers in skimpy, shimmery--yep you guessed it--hotpants dance around. Choreographer to the stars Dan Karaty maintains that Kylie and Britney have fantastic bodies thanks to dance. But the opening case study of a real dancer who had to get her figure back after a period of inactivity due to illness is unnecessary. It's only once the charming Karaty goes into the workout that there is no doubt he knows how to put across his point: dance is indeed a fun way to get a good body. The session is divided into six sections which target legs, thighs, burning fat, waist, abs and glutes. "Bounce" features a sexy bounce move, "Slide" is based on a sexy slide from leg to leg, "Rush" is a fast fun section, and by the time you reach the slower "Groove" section you might kid yourself that you're just steps away from looking like Karaty's confident back-up dancers. "Two Step" is the hardest of the six sections in terms of coordination, but it's not impossible. The only disappointing section is the final cooldown. It's not as fun as the rest, and the addition of abs and glutes might complete the fitness aspect but doesn't gel with the rest of the up-beat funky workout. Not for serious fitness fanatics but undeniably fun--and it'll do wonders for your dance-floor cred. --Lorna V

I have no shame in admitting I'm a lazy so and so when it comes to exercise. If I can drive there, I will. This however, means that I am extremely unfit and get out of breath relatively easily. I wanted something that was sort of fun rather than a boring aerobics video with an annoying instructor shouting things, so when I saw The Hotpants Workout DVD by Dan Karaty I thought 'great!'
THE HOTPANTS WORKOUT
Dan Karaty is a choreographer for pop stars such as Kylie, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera (no, that is most certainly not why I bought it). He leads the workout with four female backing dancers and does all the bits and bobs on the 'extras'. The front cover is decidedly tacky, but who cares? It looks promising on the back cover.
The workout comprises of 6 sections altogether which I'll explain now:
1) BOUNCE
FOR - bums and thighs MUSIC - a slow sexy R & B groove DURATION - 7 minutes NEXT DAY 'OW' FACTOR = none MY OPINION - this is an easy groovy routine which gets you nicely warmed up and doesn't require any practise or coordination.
2) SLIDE
FOR - inner and outer thighs MUSIC - a medium paced funky groove DURATION - 7 minutess NEXT DAY 'OW' FACTOR = slight bum ache & ache between shoulders MY OPINION - if performed on its own this isn't a tiring sequence. A couple of the steps take a little practise and require coordination but once you've mastered them it's really quite an enjoyable routine.
3) RUSH
FOR - fat burning MUSIC - fast(ish) euphoric trance DURATION - 6 minutes NEXT DAY 'OW' FACTOR = upper arm shoulder ache & bum ache MY OPINION - this is probably my favourite routine - probably because the music is the best of the lot. I also like it because it incorporates breakdowns in the music for stopping and stretching your muscles to avoid cramp. It does require a little bit of coordination to complete this routine but I find that it comes naturally.
4) GROOVE
FOR - waist and hips MUSIC - slow vocal groove DURATION - 7 minutes NEXT DAY 'OW' FACTOR = none MY OPINION - this is one of the less demanding routines. The only thing that could possibly challenge you is keeping your balance on one leg. If performed on its own this routine warms me up and gets my heart beating but I don't perspire.
5) TWO STEP
FOR - thighs MUSIC - unsurprisingly, a two step garage beat DURATION - 7 minutes NEXT DAY 'OW' FACTOR = yeowch! This one tightens my calves for a couple of days MY OPINION - I find this the most energetic routine. It is hard work on the legs and requires fast footwork. This has my heart beating fast and I always work up a sweat! Dan explains the most complicated step in slow motion which might be useful for people who can't grasp it so quickly. I found the steps easy but I think they could challenge some people. It is reassuring to see that even Dan & the girls are sweating after this one!
6) ABS, GLUTES & COOLDOWN
FOR - tums and bums MUSIC - same as BOUNCE DURATION - 6 minutes NEXT DAY 'OW' FACTOR = tight stomach muscles MY OPINION - it is easy to follow Dan's muscle stretches although I always end up entirely knackered halfway through the sit ups (there are 88 in total!!) the reason these are so hard is because Dan says you mustn't let your shoulderblades touch the floor (so you're basically just clenching a little bit, not going all the way up and back down).
CONTENTS OF THE DVD
When you load up the DVD there are two pages of warnings about the DVD which you should read once. Unfortunately when you continue to use it you can't skip these pages - but don't stress, just change into your exercise clothes and get a drink while it's loading.
Once loaded you have a menu with four options:
Play DVD Play routine Chapter selection Special features
Play routine gives you the option of playing the whole 6 sections that make up the routine. Chapter selection gives you a menu of the 6, of which you select one to play. These features are practically the same, but I guess they do no harm.
Play DVD takes you to the intro with Dan doing lots of show-offy dancing (alright, enough thanks!!) It's nice in a way though because after the dance he introduces himself and explains the purpose of the DVD (to tone/lose weight off bum, thighs & stomach). It also introduces an ex-dancer called Hannah who had trouble with her weight. After practising this DVD every day she lost a considerable amount of weight and they show her progress in this section. Those using the DVD for weight loss may find this inspiring, but I would rather put on a little weight so it's of no use to me. In addition to 'Hannah's story' they show the producers who made the tunes for the routine, which was more interesting to me.
The special features duplicate Hannah's story and then have several gallery pictures of Dan and the female dancers. It's better than nothing but not something you'd probably look at more than twice (unless of course you're male).
THE FINAL VERDICT
I bought this DVD with the intention of just keeping fit and keeping my body nice and toned. I felt a little bit of an idiot jumping around in my living room at first, but soon got used to it.
Now I have completed all of the routines I like to mix them around and do different ones together. If you buy this/already have it you'll know what I mean. You don't have to complete all of the sections, and apart from BOUNCE and COOLDOWN I think you could perform them in any order. I don't do this anywhere near every day but I do like to have it in my DVD player for when I want exercise which is more energetic than yoga.
I would almost guarantee that if you completed the whole DVD every day you'd lose weight. Even 'two-step' on its own has me sweating like a bastard - and I very much doubt I could complete all 6 sections at one time - I'd probably faint!
I think this is a well designed routine because in each of the 6 routines Dan slowly builds up different elements of the routine, making it more complicated with each repetition. This means that you're never doing exactly the same thing for more than a few seconds and so it's hard to get bored. I expect with time I'll grow a little bit tired of the routines, but as the music is generally quite good and I don't use it every day I should imagine I'll use it a lot before getting a different DVD.
Another great thing about this is that you don't need any bulky/expensive equipment to exercise - you just need a DVD player and away you go!
I'd definitely recommend this to the ladies out there who want something relatively fun just to keep themselves nice and trim.

Advantages: Great fun, works many parts of the body, good music Disadvantages: Can't skip over the health warnings, some moves are a bit complicated
...I am utterly sick of the gym and hate jogging. Doing exercise tapes at home therefore suits me. I have a few videos that I do quite often, but I was getting a bit bored with them and spotted the Hotpants Workout on Amazon that claims you will ‘lose a stone off your bum, legs & tum’. This was enough to make me buy it on DVD for £16.19. It is also available on video for £11.19 at Amazon. You can recognise it in the shops by the gold Lycra clad pert ... ...He shows this at the beginning of the DVD if you just ‘play DVD’ rather than go to the ‘chapter selection’. Dan has four beautiful, skinny girls doing the dance moves with him. I’m not sure whether this is irritating or inspiring, as it can be off putting seeing such perfection as you look down at your wobbly bits, but on the other hand, you think that, just maybe, you could look like that too (yeah right!).

Advantages: fun, good music Disadvantages: takes a few sessions to get the hang of it
Before I bought the Hotpants workout I had scoffed at the idea that any of the ever-so-fashionable dance DVDs were actually a really good form of exercise. This is the workout that made me eat my words - even though I would still never go near a pair of hotpants....
I decided to give up my gym membership because of the cost and bought this second-hand from a seller on Amazon for £4 along with a couple of others to try working out at home. I have ... ...the ones I bought, mainly because of the name and the bum picture on the cover, and I was intending to give it away to a friend who loves wearing Hotpants after a few uses. BUT, when the DVD arrived I really got into it! Serious exercise buffs might think it was frivolous but for something that leaves you out of breath and sweating feeling like you've had a decent workout, and which lets you see a progressive improvement in your own fitness, this ...

...when I found out that the local library lets you rent them out for a three week period for free! They've got about 25 in there so I reckon that'll keep me going for the next year or so - excellent!! The hotpants workout was the first one I decided to try as it is a dance based workout and I would love to look like the girl on the cover......
The DVD starts off with choreographer Dan Karaty doing a dance down a lighted corridor. He then says 'Don't ... ...and had put on weight. The video diary shows her going from 11st 8 to 10st in six weeks! She did do the workout everyday though which has to get boring. She did look slimmer and her body looked great but her face looked really gaunt, maybe because her hair had been straightened but I prefered her overall look before she lost the weight!
The workout is broken down into five mini routines with an abs and 'butt-ups' and cooldown section at the end. ...

Advantages: Fun, gets you moving/sweating Disadvantages: Some routines tricky
The hotpants workout. Why did I buy this? Do I have a creeping desire to shimmy around a disco like Kylie, with bits of my perfectly toned rear on display for all to see? Erm, no. It was the no.1 selling exercise dvd when I bought it on Amazon last year, so I figured it must be good. This dvd has, as you can see, an annoyingly pert bottom on the cover. I figured it was just a sales tactic but turns out to be one of the dancers in the dvd. The dvd ... ...If you choose to play the dvd from start to finish, you will be greeted with a video style-y dance performance by Mr. Dan Karaty, choreographer to stars like Kylie and Britney. While there is no doubting Mr. K is an excellent and muscular dance artist, this bit seems extraneous as there's no way any mere mortal could do what he is doing ,as he is doing gymnastics off of the walls and such like.
Next up Dan introduces himself in a friendly way, and ...

Advantages: good fun, dance routines make the sessions fly by! Disadvantages: lots of stomach crunches towards the end ;-/
...off and throw it in the trash after watching just the introduction to this workout, yet my opinion was soon to change after getting over the initial annoyance of the backing music and the fact that I could never, EVER be as toned and beautiful as the dancers showing me the moves! This DVD provides an excellent workout, with the steps explained to you well, even if some of them take a little practice! I now use this routine as part of my daily work ... ...up a lot since beginning the workout a few months ago, it really does work- and you can feel the evidence of that after even one session! There is an excellent variety of slow, and fast paced routines and the warm down section in particular- although slightly grueling if you are not a fan of stomach crunches, certainly exercises your body in all the right places! Each routine on the DVD is designed for a different part of the body, and this is handy ...

Advantages: Decent soundtrack, well choreographed routine, hard going (!) Disadvantages: None for me
...A couple of years ago I really enjoyed podium and stage dancing at my favourite 'hard dance' clubs. Having giving that up I realised a few months ago just how unfit I was and bought The HotpantsWorkoutDVD. While that is great and I still do it from time to time I know all the routines now so when the Ministry Of Sound advertised Pump It Up on TV before Christmas I got quite excited (a bit sad, but I love dancing!) and ordered it immediately.
PUMP IT UP
Anyone with a TV will remember the raunchy video for Eric Prydz's Call On Me dance tune, which featured lots of attractive women (and one man) doing a sexually charged aerobic workout. If you liked that, you'll love this, because the DVD was inspired by that video and features most of the dancers who appeared in it (including Juan the man, for the ladies). With this in mind I...
