This is a very emotional movie about a young girl who suffers severe physical and mental injury when involved in a riding accident in which her friend is killed and her horse severely injured. Refusing to have the horse killed as advised by a vet, the girl's mother realises that bringing the horse back to to a condition in which it could be ridden again maybe the only way to help her daughter. She learns of a man through the internet who talks to horse - a horse whisperer - and can train them this way and contacts him to help...
This movie contains heartwrenching moments and beautiful scenery but is simply not possible for me to recommend. The scene right at the beginning is so horrific where the horse is hit by the lorry that it put me off watching the rest of the movie...surely the point could have been made in less graphic detail. Also the movie is far too long and plods along at a really slow pace as well which makes it impossible to watch for this length of time.
The acting performances are good - if dull. Robert Redford plays the horse whisperer (and also directs) to good effect and both Kistin Scott(Grace’s mother) and Scarlett Johansson(Grace) both put in peformances which can not be faulted as such but are let down by a plodding script. Unsurprising, romance blossoms between the two lead characters, both of whom are extremely coy about it to the point where you almost scream at them to get it on and get the movie over with.
There really is little to recommend here. The plot is excedingly obvious and crushingly boring. At just under three hours long, you get the feeling that so much of this movie could and should have been left on the cutting room floor. I heard it said once that a good director is able to look critically at his work and realise that, yes, a lot of hard work may have gone into some scenes, but sometimes they have to be lost in order to make the movie watchable. Obviously, robert Redford is yet to learn this and as a result all of his movies seem to come in mammoth lengths...and all are exceedingly dull as a result.
This is no exception. There is nothing spectacular to hold your attention either through sfx or plot. You know the story before it happens - the usual Hollywood trash and wait...and wait...and wait for it to come about. Then you get off your aching butt, take out the video and put it to the back of the shelf.
Trust me - BORING MOVIE!
