Deep psychological thriller that draws you in to spectate as the chilling, dark story characterised by its never-ending suspense of unexpected twists and turns unfolds,and you are invited to watch as the four characters' personality traits unfold delivering some suprising and unappetising scenes, it is tainted with foreboding and a sense of pure evil unwrapping before your very eyes..
For me the film reminded me both of 'Shallow Grave' (the character portrayls, black humour and unexpected happenings)and 'The Omen' (Evil people and their betraying facades)This intelligent, well-paced film itself centres around four teenagers, all pupils at a rather typical english public school whom decided to miss their geography field trip and hide-out in a 2nd World War bunker, it is here that the nightmare begins and the laughter stops.
Opening scene depicts Thora Birch (Liz)bloody and straggled she collapses inside the school hallway after calling the emergency line.We then listen to her account of the fouteen days she spent underground as told to her appointed police psychologist.
The events within the bunker walls are not 'jump-out-of-your-skin frightening' but successfully chill and forebode with their frightening realism emodied in both the characterisations and settings. Frankie (Keira Knightley) plays Liz's best friend with grand applomb, exploiting her blonde barbie-doll attributes to her best advantage. The guys are played by Desmond Harrington as Mike fancied by everyone the epitomy of rich american youth and Lawrence Fox as Martin the typical educated, clean-cut english boy.
Key to the plot but peripheral to the main part is Martin played by Daniel Brocklebank a complex individual whom is instrumental in the film, as he alone has a key to the bunker..
The success of the film for me does not rest on it's scare-quality but the pace of the film and its roller coster delivery of twists and turns at every unexpected minute - what is reality and what is not? The characters work well together in making this 'stuck in a hell-hole senario' believable, the realism is excellent - I physically squirmed at the moving cockroaches and other 'parasites'the scenes toward the end are gruesomely graphic, the altering themes (Loud music, swearing, running, humour etc)replaced by silence, awkward glances,sense of fear works well to accentuate the feeling of desperation and dispair central to the closing scenes.
It is a good drama-thriller that is original and successful in delivering an unexpected frightener, the ending fulfills the adage that 'things are not always as they seem' be prepared to be scared!

Was so looking forward to this one - especially when my dad watched it and went on and on about a twist at the end. Caught it on TV the other night. Sorely dissapointed and now am convinced my Dad is the biggest and most gullible wuss to walk the face of the Earth. Great review but have to disagree - crappy film. Carmen x

I don't have a problem with scary films, but I do have problem with confined spaces. So, despite reading this great opinion about it, I won't be watching this one. Barbara

Advantages: Truly gets under your skin, disturbing, genuinely intriguing and exciting. Disadvantages: Some hammy acting, desires true concentration, truly awful British accents {except Thora Birch wo does very well}
