Why would four, wealthy, public school teenagers want to go and stay in an old army bunker just to avoid a field trip? I don't know, but they do and they pay for it too. Crazy.
Anyway, back to the opinion.
In brief, The Hole is about these four (somewhat stupid) English (but one American) teens who set up camp in this large underground hide-out. Martin, the mastermind who locked them in the bunker and made sure their parents and the school didn't find out about it and left them there. On the day he's supposed to let them out, he doesn't and they're locked in. They find things fun to start with - all that alcohol and sex but then they run out of food and the water and electricity go off... Scary!
The best thing (or at least my favourite thing) about this film is that you don't find out the whole (somewhat disturbing) truth until the very end and the whole thing is VERY chilling!
The cast isn't huge but each and every cast member performs very well. Thora Birch who plays Liz is the most interesting character. It's her scheme (along with best friend Martin) that gets the others in The Hole. She has an obsession with with Mike, school stud. He doesn't notice her at the school where everyone is apparently a slut and blonde (She has short, dark hair) She even dyes her hair blonde to try and make him notice her. It's her irrational obsession that makes everything so creepy I think!
Mike, the stud, is a son of a famous rock star and so obviously there is extra media hype when he is one of the missing school kids. He's alos the American one. Played by Desmond Harrington, he plays the role as Mr. Popular well is all in all a very good actor.
Along with Mike came his best friend Geoff played by Laurence Fox. His wasn't a particular memorable role or performance but I suppose he was nessecary in the great scheme of things!
The last teen is Frankie (Keira Knightly) who is one of the typical girls found at the school - very pretty, very slutty! She's Liz's best friend but they're like chalk and cheese! Liz brings full camping equipment with her inot the bunker whereas Frankie brings her inflatable pink sofa and complains that there will be no fresh air for her hair!
The film jumps around a bit from future, back to past and back again but it is fairly easy to follow. you know Liz (Thora Birch), the most central character gets out and survives because it goes back to her speaking to the police and her therapist (it's quite an ordeal) quite a few times. But like I said, it's easy to follow. It makes it more interesting too and means the main bulk of the film isn't just the four idiots in the dark and dank hole.
The film is good and I would reccomend it if you like a bit of horror. There are some quite violent and sickening scenes though so don't watch it if you don't like that kind of thing! It's most definatly NOT a 'feel-good' film but it's worth getting if there's nothing else on Blockbuster's shelf that takes you fancy!
