This film has been likened by some to the Blair Witch project. Do not be fooled by such reviews. This is the complete opposite – starting with the fact that this is actually VERY GOOD. The other main difference is that this is based on a believable tale (no belief in the supernatural required!). There is a very good plot with more twists and turns than the current Levi’s advert. And what’s more for the first time in a long time I could not predict a single one!
This film keeps you guessing throughout, as well as providing some interesting insights into the human mind (ok, so a very messed up human mind but still human). It is pretty gruesome and graphically so, so it’s not one for the faint hearted. However I think it is wrong to dub it as a horror movie as it does not fit into many of the stereotypes this conjures up. It is far more horrific than actual horror.
So what is it about? Well I can not tell you much about the plot without giving things away which are far more fun to experience while watching the movie than just reading about them here. From the start webs are woven and realities created that seem less and less stable as the film goes on. The basic idea is four rich students go into a war bunker (referred to as the hole). No one knows what happened, not even those who survive the experience due to amnesia. However during the film flashbacks tell the truth as the memory returns. However what is the real truth? Why did not everyone survive? Was there a murderer amongst them? Did someone else find them? Was another pupil exacting his own form of justice on their too-perfect lives?
So who would enjoy this film? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- People who want to be entertained with an intriguing, sometimes shocking film. - Those who are sick of who-dunnit films which are too easy to guess the ending of. - Those who enjoy insights into seriously twisted people’s minds. - People who like seeing a good bit of blood and guts. - Those who hate films always having happy endings. - People who want a film that will engage them and make them think (during the film to follow it, and afterwards about what happened). - People who like a film that fully explains itself by the end, leaving no bits for the viewer to try to figure out themselves later.
Who should avoid this film? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- People with a nervous disposition. - Those who hate blood and gore. (There is not an excess of this but there is some.) - People looking for a nice relaxing night at the movies – for two reasons: 1 You have to concentrate to follow this film. I managed it despite not being at full health so it’s not really hard to follow but you do need to pay attention. 2 It is quite disturbing and horrific in places so not particularly relaxing. - Those who like flash special effects and fantastic scenery (not because this film is amateurish but because it is set in a hole and 80% of the film is set in the hole). - People on a first date. You are more likely to get your date worried about your mental frame of mind than scare them so much that you have an excuse to cuddle up. - Those who suffer from paranoia. - Those who are obsessed with a member of the opposite sex and are looking for good ways to attract their attention. :)
This really was the best film I have seen in a long while. It was good to see a film set in England for a change instead of America. It was even better to see a film which relied on a great plot rather than flash effects. And it was fantastic to see a film that kept me guessing throughout.

Hey! I liked the Blair Witch Project! Much better than this in my opinion. Great review though, I really liked your who would like it / not like it approach!

That was a great op! I love this sort of film but haven't seen this one yet. You have described the film without needing to give the plot away which can sometimes be quite a difficult thing to do. Thanks! Joanna.

Great op - I didn't like this film as much as you though (in fact one of my VERY early ops *cringe* tried to convey this fact and failed miserably - to be rewritten one day!) I didn't feel it kept me guessing, it would have been much better if it had pursued both possible plots for a lot longer, rather than giving up on one early on in the film, making it obvious (I thought!) what really happened! Still enjoyed reading your opinion though! Hannah :o)

Review of The Hole (DVD)
Advantages: Truly gets under your skin, disturbing, genuinely intriguing and exciting. Disadvantages: Some hammy acting, desires true concentration, truly awful British accents {except Thora Birch wo does very well}
