constructive? The Argolin-Foamisi War lasted for just 20 minutes during which time the planet of Argolis was turned into a blasted cinder - a radioactive wasteland deadly to almost all. The few surviving members of the now ageing and sterile Argolin race made a remarkable decision: the story of their people and the husk of their world would stand as a lesson to the galaxy about the horrors of war. The planet would become the most unlikely of holiday resorts. To the Doctor and Romana Argolis seems like a restful and fascinating place to relax after their recent adventures. They can take in the beauty of the multi-coloured shifting sands from the safety of the towering Leisure Hive and catch up with Argolin advances in the obscure science of tachyonics. Typically enough however murder and intrigue follow the time travellers wherever they go; and a lunatic's plan to restore Argolis' proud warrior past could quite literally tear the Doctor and his friend apart... when they're as highly polished and as carefully selected asThe Leisure Hive. Particularly significant in terms of the series' history, this sequence marked an end toWho's descent into vaudeville, and heralded the entrance of hotshot, new-broom Series Producer, John Nathan-Turner.The opening long, slow pan across a wintry beach, on which an autumnal Doctor sits slumped, immediately declares the show's serious intentions. The narrative itself is an erudite discussion on fascism and racism taking in regeneration, megalomania, cloning and a series of Agatha Christie-esque murders. It's the style, rather than the story, however, that's foregrounded inThe Leisure Hive: along with his new sober approach, Nathan-Turner brought a new theme tune, a new logo, a new striking red costume and a new title sequence--one that, tellingly, moved away from the enclosed time tunnel to show the vastness of space opening up. Productions values are similarly high: the Quantel effects are impressive even now, and the performances are quite stunning, particularly Baker's as the prematurely aged, infirm Doctor.By dispensing with the clowning and with what he termed "Douglas Adams' undergrad humour", Nathan-Turner reinvigorated a show that was becoming stale. The diegetic rebirth brought about by the Regeneration Drive at the show's denouement is an apposite motif, emblematic of the rebirth of the show itself--The Leisure Hivetruly represented a new beginning forWho.On the DVD:the images, colours and new 5.1 sound are all impressive, as are the abundance of extras. "A New Beginning" features a rare interview with Baker himself, and "From Avalon to Argolis" indulges in some very satisfying back-biting. There's also a nostalgia-inducing contemporaneous clip of an impossibly youngBlue Peterpresenter looking genuinely frightened by the exhibits of the then-great Longleat Doctor Who Exhibition.--Paul Eisinger

I was hooked straight away and the spooky threatening music was good.
A team is sent in to find out what is happening on the island and as you can probably guess they start fighting for their lives. Even though they have all the latest weapons and technology at their disposal they are in for a terrifying experience. Opinions: *********** Although initially promising the film falters and dies slowly until a predictable ending. The bits where humans are eaten is NOT done in an 'over the top' Gruesome way. The music throughout the movie admittedly does add some suspense. The special effects are standard and nothing 'special' The acting is not the best and at times a bit wooden
Only watch this when or if it comes on TV and even then don't go out of your way.

Alien abduction but not of people, the Aliens take over the minds of Ants. Oh dear.
A meteor falls to Earth on a remote and sparsely populated island and a few days later the Ants begin to act strangely. Some people are eaten and some taken over. When an ant gets in your ear in 'controls' you.
So much so that a crack team is brought in to deal with the unusual problem, well, the team slowly get killed. But eventually those who ... ...the aliens.
An odd and disappointing ending.
Started promisingly enough but it faded quickly. The acting is poor and the dialog equally slow. The special effects clearly did not have a big budget and it shows. This really is the definition of 'TV' movie and that's where it should have gone straight to.
Wait for it to appear on TV then watch it, or not. ...

Advantages: Good range of varied special features. Disadvantages: Special Features vary in quality.
It seems to have been a fair while since I reviewed a DVD from my Dr Who DVD collection. I thought it was about time I remedied the situation and write about a classic adventure from Tom Baker's tenure as the fourth Doctor. The Leisure Hive is published by the BBC and my copy cost me £7.99 from www.sendit.com ~ a massive saving of a twelve quid off the recommended retail price of £19.99.

~~~THE PLOT.
In this adventure we see the Doctor and current companion Romana (in her second guise as played by Lala Ward) landing on the leisure planet of Argolis ~ they want a holiday and (after a brief and unsuccessful sojourn to Brighton) they decide on Argolis because it is famous for its recreational facilities. After a horrendous and destructive ...
Advantages: Good plot, convincing aliens, lack of appalling bit-part actors. Disadvantages: Somewhat unmemorable and a less than spiffy new mix of the theme tune.
're interested in the subject, and geared more towards the fannish type than random punter. Detailed and well-researched, they look at the changes the show went through under John Nathan-Turner's producership, the creation of the new titles, and the writing of the story. Additionally, there's a nice little extra from Blue Peter, showing an eighties feature they did on the Doctor Who exhibition at Longleat.
The best word to describe The Leisure Hive would be sturdy: it's a decent story, with convincing aliens and entertaining performances. It's quite good really. But it's nothing remarkable, and, for me, mostly forgettable. For someone just dipping into the Doctor Who DVD collection, I'd recommend one of the more popular stories, but this one undoubtedly has its merits, they're just pretty darn solid rather than outstanding. ...
