world cricket. The programme starts with early flickering images of the great WG Grace batting in the nets and ends with the Australian's annihilation of England in the 2002/3 Ashes series. We look at the incredible careers of Jack Hobbs Wally Hammond George Headley Denis Compton and Len Hutton with a special feature on the best of them all Don Bradman whose 1948 Ashes side remained unbeaten in England at every level. There's extraordinary footage from the notorious 1932 Bodyline series and the wonderful scenes at The Oval in 1953 as Len Hutton's England team won the Ashes after 20 years of trying. We see Jim Laker's best-ever figures of 9 for 37 and 10 for 53 against the Australians at The Oval in 1956 before looking at another record-breaking feat Fred Trueman's 300th Test wicket in 1961. West Indies dominated the 70's and 80's and Viv Richards epitomised their team with his incredible century against England in Antigua off just 56 balls the quickest ever recorded. ...stand out points shown in this, included Geoffrey Boycott scoring his 100th, hundred score against Australia. From the 1970's it has to be said that the quality of television begins to improve in quality, and this DVD provides such evidence in terms of being able to watch cricket on a television. England win the series 5-1 though this is mainly down to the Australian team signing up to the World series event and unable to play against England. From a historical factual point of view, the details contained here make this really a most enjoyable sporting history film to watch.
1981 Ian Botham is shown scoring big totals with the bat, and Bob Willis taking some great wickets. Here a England or any cricketing fan can see Botham taking some marvellous wickets Botham almost managed to complete a hatrick of wickets in succession, narrowly...

Advantages: An intelligently crafted film Disadvantages: Extras not worth watching repeatedly
...When I sat down over Christmas 2007 to watch a BBC showing of "The History Boys", I did so with no real expectations. I was aware it was written by Alan Bennett, who was someone I was aware of, but whose work had largely passed me by. I also knew that it had started life as a highly successful play, but that was about the extent of my knowledge. I thought it would make for acceptable enough background noise as I read my book, never thinking that not only would the book be forgotten that night, but that the DVD would soon go straight onto my Amazon Wishlist and soon become part of my collection.
In 1980s Sheffield, eight students at Cutler's Grammar School have gained the best A-Level results the school has ever seen. Keen to go to either Oxford or Cambridge Universities, they return for an extra term to study for the entrance exams...

Advantages: Lots of footage, Features some amazing shots bowls and catches Disadvantages: A lot of black and white footage
...A Century of Cricket is probably the best DVD I have purchased for under £5.Presented by David Gower, it features some of Crickets greatest players such as: Sir Donald Bradman, Viv Anderson, W B Grace, Brian Lara and Shane Warne.
The DVD lasts in total for about two hours. As expected from the title the footage begins in the early 1900's, where limited footage of early cricket is shown.
Some bonus features of the DVD include: Full One Day International Records; Full Test Cricket Records; Comprehensive First Class Records; Profiles On Top 40 Cricketers Of All Time; Special Section On Top 5 Greatest Ever Players. Also includes footage of Gloustershire's four consecutive one day trophy wins.
If I was asked what my favourite section of the DVD was then I would probably say the ashes footage form the 1930's. Seeing Don Bradman...
