The Hills is my guilty little pleasure.
There's backstabbing, friendships, boyfriends, clubbing, making up, breaking up, in fact this programme has everything!
The Hills is actually a spin-off television series from the very popular show, Laguna Beach. This show followed a bunch of high school students through their life in Laguna Beach, California, a very affluent, beautiful area right on the coast of Southern California. One of the main characters was Lauren Conrad, often referred to as LC. She, in my opinion is quite a pretty, nice mannered girl, if somewhat spoilt. She has the clothes, looks, long blond hair and drives a very nice convertible car. I do like her and I think she is quite entertaining. She often seems to have a rough ride where some of her friends are concerned but that is life, and more importantly that is life in Southern California. I lived there for a while and it is hard I think to make some real, true friends. There are a lot of fake people out there only looking to be your friend if they can get something out of it but if you look hard enough you will find some great people.
The Hills follows Lauren as she moves up to the Hollywood Hills to pursue a new life away from Laguna Beach.
She is basically the main character of the show and then her friends make up the supporting characters. Lauren is heavily into fashion. She actually now has her own fashion line that she created and sells in a few boutiques in California. When the show first started she worked at Teen Vogue as an intern. Apparently she got this job on her own merit and not specifically for the show.
Her friend from Teen Vogue is a girl called Whitney Port, they get on well and she to me seems the most well adjusted girl on the show, quite focused on her career and willing to take steps to move forward in her life. She took an internship in Paris for Teen Vogue, some of which was shown on the show.
Lauren's ex-roommate and now biggest nemesis is Heidi Montag. They were really great friends and then fell out when Heidi started dating her current boyfriend Spencer Pratt. What she sees in this guy I do not know because he is a lazy, disrespectful, horrible guy and really does live up to his last name (although it doesn't have the same meaning in American unfortunately). In the start of the series Heidi was quite normal, looking, pretty but not too over the top. She has now had a make over and in my opinion looks quite plastic and unnatural which is a shame as she is pretty.
Other friends appear including current roommates Lo Bosworth and Audrina Partrigde. You do not see much of their extended lives, just their relationships with Lauren but that is really all the show is about.
Now, they do say that some scenes are created for dramatic effect. I do believe most of the emotions and the goings on are real and the feelings are true. I think what they mean by that is sometimes they have them sitting eating at tables and that obviously needs a bit of setting up and the conversations they have are perhaps p0rmopted to see what they feel about things.
The language is great, real Californian teenage speak (although I think they are in their early 20's now). WTF is one phrase used a lot (translated as "What the f**k), Oh my gosh, Shut up, etc, etc, all said with a lovely accent!
If you are looking for funny, escapism television then look no further than The Hills!!
