I am someone who although I sit screaming through a horror film I usually don't mind watching them but it all depends as I do like a horror film to have a plot as well. I think one of the worst film for goriness I've seen has to be Hostel but I decided it had been a while since seeing a horror and The Hills Have Eyes was always one I'd wanted to see and heard good reviews about. I had put off watching it a lot of times though mainly for the fact I get scared easily and every time I was free I was usually in the house alone and prefer to watch these kind of films when other people are around or I'll creep around every corner frightening myself because of my overactive imagination.
The film begins with us seeing a lot of footage of nuclear bombs and it begins with some scientists being in the dessert obviously testing the land for radiation count. The men are killed and dragged off by a man with an axe and then
it turns to another scene. It is a petrol station in the dessert and the Carter family are on a trip to San Diego for their Silver Anniversary from Ohio. The whole family are there but the petrol station attendant informs the family that they can take a shortcut through the hills to get there quicker and the family stupidly decide to take his advice. If you see the man most of us would never take his advice.
After driving for a while some spikes all of a sudden lift up from the sand and the tyres get punctured, being done on purpose by someone or something. The father decides to go back to the petrol station to get some help and a tow but the rest of the family decide they could be there a while so get some chairs out and have something to eat and sunbathe. We are shown though as the family settle down that from a distance there are binoculars watching them but the family are completely unaware of this. The son notices one of the family dogs Beauty has gone running into the distance and so he runs after her to see where she is going. After searching for a while he later finds the corpse decaying and runs back.
The film soon plays on with the family wondering why the father has been gone so long. Also the son finally comes out with the theory that he thinks people are living in the hills but none of the family believe this and think he is being ridiculous. I don't want to give away much more by getting further into the plot but from this part on the real scares begin and be warned it gets very gory. I did like this film but at times I was hiding behind my hands or screaming at the blood and attacks. It is not for the faint hearted as there are a lot of odd looking people in this film and blood everywhere even though at time sit looked really fake it still isn't pleasant.
I found at the start of the film I had already sort of guessed what way the plot was going and who the scary people in the film would end up being. The setting of the film doesn't really change much other than keeping in the sandy dessert and the lodged trailer. The film isn't too predictable all of the time but then in ways it is, although it was quite a good plot and was a film which had something going on most of the time, passing quickly.
The acting was as good as can be for a horror film but the cast were quite unknown the only one I knew was Emilie de Ravin who was in Lost but she wasn't one of the actors on screen most often and she pretty much screams a lot and isn't really doing a great acting job.
I'd say this film was for those who like horror films and want a bit of a scare maybe for Halloween you might pick this since it is coming up soon. I wouldn't recommend this for those who scare easily or feel ill at the sight of blood or just hate gory films. It ends on a bit of an unfinished note leaving space for a sequel if they wanted to do one which of course they did but I don't think I'll bother watching it as I am not sure if a second one would really be necessary and might just ruin it for me.
The film is available to buy on DVD for £5.98 at Amazon. It lasts approximately 107 minutes and is a UK: 18 mainly for violence.
