***Why I watched The Haunting In Connecticut***
As an avid horror fan I try to watch any new horror films to see if I can add them to my collection. I mostly go the the cinema with the girls if the film seems really good otherwise I just wait for it to be released on dvd.
Unfortunately my partner does not share my enthusiasm in horror films!
I enjoyed the trailer for this film and the fact it was allegedly based on a true story so I headed to the cinema with the girls.
***The cast***
Kyle Gallner as Matt Campbell (Veronica Mars, Jennifers Body) Virginia Madsen as Sara Campbell (The Candy Man, Firewall) Elias Koteas as Reverend Popescu (Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)
***Plot***
The film was released in March 2007 and is allegedly based on a true paranormal event that happended in Connecticut.
The film is based in 1987 and tells the story of Matt Campbell unexplainable experiences he is faced with when his family move into a new house which was previously a funeral home.
The family are forced to move as Matt has Hodgkins Lymphoma and cannot continue to travel the long journey to the only hospital he can get treatment from on such a regular basis. Unfortunately the families finances are extremely stretched and they take the first house they come across that is near to the hospital and is very cheap.
The family relocate to their new home however Matt's father continues to commute to keep his job which is the families only income.
After a tour of the house Matt decides to pick the the room in his basement as his bedroom. After some digging around it turns out the basement has been boxed off to hide the apart of the room which was used as a mortuary.
Shortly after moving to the house Matt starts to experience violent and supernatural events that he cannot explain, in turn the family also start to see the same things. However they blame the strange events on the new drugs Matt is taking which are part of a clinical trial.
Matt seeks the help of a minister to explain what has been blamed as hallucinations and stress induced symptoms. From here on the full extent of Matt's experience are revealed with devastating results (sorry I do not want to give it all away!).
***My opinion*** The trailer for this film was quite gripping and it appealed to me straight away.
The movie theatre was full so I thought I was in for a treat. Unfortunately the film did not meet my expectations however that does not mean I did not enjoy some of it.
To be honest I was really attracted by the fact it was allegedly based on a true story but I have seen enough films to know that this is not always the case.
The actors to me were mostly unknown and I can honestly say the acting was good. From the start I felt that I was given the chance to get to know the characters and relate to them which I think is something I think is really important. I really felt for Matt and the situation his family faced with mounting debt due to paying to give Matt the best treatment they could find. The pressure put on the family was very well portrayed.
The house and its story was intriguing and atmosphere. There were parts that made me jump but there were just as many parts that were too unbelievable to be true.
The events that led to the truth being uncovered started off as interesting and quite scary but to be honest the ending was very, very disappointing. The special effects were overdone and I just switched off near the end. The film was 132 mins but it felt much longer and not for any good reasons.
I have since researched the history behind the film and it is only very loosely based on a similar story that occurred in Connecticut but unfortunately the story was never confirmed as true or untrue.
But who am I to argue this as if this really happened I can see why it was well hidden!
***Summary***
A fairly average horror film, good acting and characters. Unbelievable ending that disappointed. One to rent but not buy.
