INTRODUCTION
It happened that one day I was walking with a dear friend when we saw a multiplex; we thought it could be nice to watch this movie... the last show began five minutes later, so we quickly bought the tickets. Sure having as a director the same who directed "The sixth sense" and "Signs" seemed to be a good "business card": two well-done movies, with the right suspence, I really appreciated. Moreover we both would like to see it... Well, it hasn't been a good idea.
THE MOVIE
Central Park, New York, a day like all the others. Suddenly all the people in the park and near it begins to behave in a strange way and to die. They immediately think at a terrorist attack with some kind of toxin and the first post-mortem examinations confirm in the bodies there was a natural toxin. When this phenomenon starts to spread
in other places, the panic grows. They soon understand all these deaths cannot be caused by criminals and they think about another explanation. Maybe plants, that can change their metabolism in a few time, see human beings as a threat and try to protect themselves by giving off substances which induce the brain to act a certain way... How can they stop this mass casualties?
PERSONAL OPINION
I have to admit I didn't appreciate this movie at all. Even if the opinion on a movie is really subjective, neither my companion nor the (lean) audience in the cinema really enjoyed it.
The idea itself is good, even if not completely new: the hypothesis the environment rebels against human beings who believe to be its owner has some interesting implication and brings us to reflect.... We are slowly (and not too much) destroying our planet: who can say one day the Earth won't come up against us? Surely our actions, pollution and the short respect for nature will bring to dramatic consequences. It's undoubtedly unnerving thinking about a threat of this kind in the face of whom we would be completely powerless.
Music and sound effects have a very important role in the movie: I dare to say sometimes (maybe always) is just the soundtrack which "scares", which injects anxiety. Considering that scenes are not as involving as it, the final effect is no big deal.
Actors are not so famous. Unluckily they're not particularly good too. Acting is not convincing. The female protagonist has beautiful blue eyes but this is not a good reason, as for me, to keep them open wide all of the time and to have always the same face! Also the dubbing leaves a lot to be desired; voices seem to be false in a sense.
Dialogues are quite banal and sometimes surreal... Believe me, at times you will ask yourselves if you're watching a (poor) comedy and it will seem absurd.
Movie is for over 14-year-olds only and I think it's a good thing because it's often splatter. In my opinion a well-done thriller or horror doesn't necessary need violent or full of blood scenes in order to put a strain. Think about "The sixth sense", able to keep you on your chair almost without macabre scenes. Someone can be bothered by these sequences; as for me they're useless considering that they don't make the movie better. Moreover, special effects are not so realistic expecially in certain sequences: it's a pity because they can enrich a film sometimes. A little "merit badge" to the macabre fancy which pervade this movie; some death is really "creative".
In short I don't recommend it. I didin't get bored just because I was too busy asking what happened to the director and the screenplayer in order to drive them to create a similar film... and I was also hoping for an interesting end. On the contrary like in other movies like this one a real end doesn't exist. So, if you want to watch it, be ready to a splatter, a little absurd movie which won't involve you.
