Advantages: Witty dialogue, sense of fun, good mix of characters Disadvantages: Not the strongest story, opening is too long
, it came as something of a surprise to find Hitchcock?s final film, 1976?s Family Plot, marked a tentative return to form.
It?s far from perfect, but much like the underrated Marnie, Family Plot seems harder to criticise for some of its dated elements so many years down the line, because for all of its contextually odd-sounding dialogue and hairstyles, as well as a staunch reliance on sets as opposed to on-location shoots, it feels like a ?Hitchcock? film should. In many ways Family Plot is one last snapshot of the glory days, out of sequence with the director?s more sombre later works; a flashback that seems like a lesser, though still-relevant sibling to fifties classics such as Rear Window and North By Northwest.
This could in part be down to Blanche Tyler (Barbara Harris), the token blonde leading-lady and one of the best for quite ...
Advantages: Great story, set in England, Great acting, special effects Disadvantages: It ended
This is one of my favourite films but I hadn?t heard of it until it caught my eye in blockbusters. I don?t know whether it was because the film was set in England, whether it was the fact London landmarks are blown up or because it?s a future that at the moment could scarily exist! Whatever the reason, I just want to watch this film over and over again.
As I said, the film is set in England, about 30 years in the future. Unlike other futuristic films there are no flying cars or any futuristic technologies. In fact this future seems more like modern society living in the past. The opening scenes tell you that the U.S is in chaos and England is being run by a Nazi style regime.
The story follows a young women named Evey who meets an unknown man known only as ?V? wearing a guy fawkes mask and becomes deeply involved in his plot to ...
Advantages: Brilliant acting, costumes, plot Disadvantages: Not entirely historically accurate, but who cares?
Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot, I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot....
We've all been to firework parties, we've all burned the "guy" on the bonfire, and all school-kids know that basically, right, there was this guy, called Guy, and he tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament, yeah, and kill King James, he was like, either James 1st or the 6th, so they caught him and tortured him and stuff, and put him on a bonfire or whatever...
But why did he do it? What makes people so angry that they want to risk their own lives and that of their family and friends to kill the most important man in Britain?
To find the answer, writer Jimmy McGovern (Writer of Cracker amongst other things) has written two films which are both on 1 dvd. The first one takes us right back to ...
