seeds when he came to London in the early 1950s. He'd already been amongst the earliest blues artists to play on a 'formal' Stateside stage, appearing at Carnegie Hall back in 1939. Born in Mississippi, raised in Arkansas, he'd settled in Chicago by the time of these recordings. This set follows on from Yazoo's The Young Bill Broonzy, and is an indispensable collection of early works. Like many of his peers, he went beyond pure blues, fulfilling the role of hokum troubadour, hopping from instrumentals ("Pig Meat Strut", "Guitar Rag") to humorous double entendre skits ("Terrible Operation Blues", "Pussy Cat Blues"), the latter enjoying the winking, saucy vocals of Jane Lucas. Georgia Tom Dorsey also contributes jangling piano on several numbers, nudging between Broonzy's resonating, almost harp-like, strings. For its time, the sound quality is mostly excellent, with lone 1928 representative "Down In The Basement" suffering from the worst 78 crackles, along with 1930's "Double Trouble Blues" and "Skoodle Do Do", both held in reserve until the disc's end. --Martin Longley

Advantages: it's cute and funny Disadvantages: not much in the way of extras
get the small Josh's clothes on (he ended up stealing his Dad's) and the reaction of Josh's Mum when she finds the big Josh in the house.
It was a "nice" film, some scenes are really funny, some rather poignant. It's not a classic like the ever popular Forrest Gump, (a firm favourite in our house) but a pleasant way to pass a couple of hours.
No one would buy this DVD for the extras. All they give you is the cinema trailer for the film lasting a little over two minutes. ...

Advantages: occasionally funny, well performed musically with great stage effects Disadvantages: much of the new material isnt funny, frequently recycles old material
simply a repeat performance of the brilliant 'Betrayal song' from part troll, albeit less well executed, and with the audience singing along.
The dvd extras are also pretty poor, consisting of a few flimsy clips and nothing much else. I found the whole thing a big letdown, and found myself hoping that Bill would stop seeking such mainstream appeal and go back to doing what he does best: crafting intelligent, creative and hilarious performances that make you laugh but also make you think.
Come on Bill, youre better than this!
Summary: A poor effort by a fantastic comedian, buy Part Troll instead ...
Advantages: Bryson's dry, stinging wit Disadvantages: A little repetitive...I say, a little repetitive
I'm a fan of Bill Bryson. I like his dry, acerbic wit, and the way he bombards the reader with lots of dry facts yet manages to still keep it entertaining.
The latest book of his I read (although not the latest written), was Notes from a Big Country.
As I said, delivering trivial facts and figures in an amusing fashion is Bryson's forte and when those facts are about the land of his birth (USA), and are compared then related to his once adopted homeland (UK), I can visualize him virtually drooling at the prospect.
And so, following his return to live in New England after 20-odd years domiciled in Olde England, when the editor of the British newspaper, The Mail on Sunday, asked him to write a weekly magazine column documenting his return home, you would imagine he'd leap at the chance.
Actually, he kept complaining that he didn ...
