What is a GuineaPig?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Guineapig is a small rodent whos real name is a cavy. Guineapigs originally came from South America and wild GuineaPigs were eaten as food all over the world. There are many different breeds of GuineaPig and they also have various different hair styles such as short, long, wiry, tufty etc.
A few years ago now I brought two baby guineapigs from a breeder. One was a short-haired guineapig which had a smooth glossy black and white coat so he was named Badger. The other guineapig was a white long haired guineapig which my brother name John-Smith (after the dude in Pocahontas).
They are very gentle and will allow anyone to handle them if they are gentle too. Guineapigs are not known for being very intelligent, but do recognise their owners and can be trained to do very simple things if the task is repeated often enough.
Health-wise they are really easy to keep - as long as they are cleaned out regularly ...
~*~ Background ~*~
GuineaPigs originated from South America where they were used as food. They have since spread all over the world where they are now pets.
The guineapig is very shy by nature and will spend a lot of time hiding. They will come out to eat at dawn and dusk when they will be harder to see
~*~ Choosing a guineapig ~*~
GuineaPigs are very sociable animals and so it is worth considering buying two as opposed to one. Some people keep rabbits and guineapigs together, however there have been reports of rabbits being attacked by their guineapig companion, although this is rare it is worth ...
