If you are a fan of John Sullivan's Only Fools and Horses you will love this spin-off' called Green Green Grass' also written by John Sullivan. Even if you have never seen Only Fools and Horses you will still enjoy as it is full of fun and originality.
First let me introduce you to Boycie and Marlene. For those of you who know them from Only Fools and Horses they are the best duo of the sitcom.
Boycie is a stubborn and snobby business man who owns a dodgy second hand car show room. He sees anyone as 'having a pound less than him as a peasant' as described by Del Boy. He has been married to Marlene for many years who is the merry, yet dopey one of the couple. She ignores his grumpy moods and manages to keep a smile on her face at all times. Before they were married, Marlene was the girl all the men knew well.....
When this series begins, the Driscoll brothers who are referred to as the 'London Maffia' are about to be released from prison. The reason they were put in prison in the first place was due to Boycie being a 'supergrass'. Hence the first reason the programme was named Green Green Grass. You will find out the other reason later on in my review. They are forced to move with their 16 year old son Tyler to a place far away where the Driscoll Brothers could not possibly find them! Where else than deep in the woodland of Shropshire!
They purchase a nice farm where the once second hand sales man becomes Mr Farmer Boyce. A bit of a change but as long as he can earn his money his doesnt mind. Again the title 'Green Green Grass' refers to the countryside that they have re-located to.
The Other Characters: -
They do meet some interesting characters, who are very much different to London folk. The farm manager Elgin Sparrow, Ploughman Jed, Herdsman Bryan and Housekeeper Mrs Cakeworthy. Lets just say they agree to use their slightly 'dippy' appearances and personalities to trick Mr Boyce into keeping their jobs at the farm. You dont learn much about these characters lives outside the farm as such but they play great parts and they join in to make the series what it is...
Also you will meet the mad Welsh neighbour - Llewelyn who appears many times in the series just to cause a bit of trouble!
Best Parts: -
There are some hillarious scenes in this series which John Sullivan has created perfectly as in Only Fools and Horses: -
Boycie purchasing an £18,000 bull when under the influence of alcohol of which he could have got it for £9000 and then waking up in the barn the next morning to have the bull staring him in the face! He finds out the bull is infact gay after he purchases 300 cows!
Boycie falling over and being sprayed in the eyes with air freshener.
Elgin the farm manager spelling out his surname over the phone and then revealing its his sister on the other end!!! You have to watch this part to see what I mean!
I am not going to reveal anymore funny parts to you, you will have to watch it!
With this DVD, not only do you get all of series one, but you get the 2005 Christmas episode which is just as funny as the series, if not better. This is when the Driscoll Brothers appear but do they catch up with Boycie??? You will have to wait and see.......
