This boxed set is a must for anyone studying the First World War or with an interest in history and gives a valuable insight into the horrors and carnage of this terrible war.

The disks contain 26 individual 45 minute episodes and describes in great detail the battles and outcomes shown in superb (but grainy) b&w film. The great thing about this series is it tells the story from all points of view (German, English, French etc.) both tactically and from the ordinary "tommy" in the trenches.
The story of the war is narrated by Sir Michael Redgrave and many leading actors from the time the series was made (1960's)voice the parts of the leading generals and politicians.
This boxed set is a must for anyone studying the First World War or with an interest in history and gives a valuable insight into the horrors and carnage of this terrible war.

The Disks :
The boxed set consists of seven disks. The first six disks contain purely the episodes from the series there are no extras on these disks. Each disk contains four or five episodes of the series and each episode is split into 5 or 6 chapters.
The seventh disk contains the extras which consists of two films - the first of which is called "Voices fropm the Western Front" and contains interviews with soldiers an airmen who lived through the carnage of the First World War. The interviews are in sound only but are accompanied by suitable films taken at the time. These interviews are from the Imperial War Museum archives.
The second film on the extras disk is "The Finished Fighter" and is a silent World War One training film showing the "Tommies" teaching American soldiers bayonet fighting techniques.
