The Graduate - Simon & Garfunkel

The Graduate - Simon & Garfunkel

Pop-folk duo Simon and Garfunkel were two years away from making one of the best-selling ... more

albums ever, 1970's Bridge Over Troubled Water,
when they contributed to the songs to The
Graduate, and so kick-started the rise of the
song-based soundtrack and soundtrack album.
Previously, there had been musicals, title songs
and then more contemporary pop musicals (such as
The Beatles's Help) but The Graduate used Paul
Simon's songs to comment on the action of a
contemporary dramatic comedy. "The Sound Of
Silence" and "Mrs Robinson" remain two of the best
pop songs ever written, while "Scarborough Fair
Canticle" has a madrigal-like beauty. The album
also features the instrumental score by Dave
Grusin. His witty, strongly crafted music is
largely inspired by such 20's and 30's dances as
the foxtrot and cha-cha, used in the film to
comment ironically on the generation-gap theme.
Although Grusin has since had great success with
his jazz piano based score for The Firm, and Paul
Simon later scored his own film, One Trick Pony,
The Graduate remains Simon, Garfunkel  and
Grusin's classic contribution to cinema history,
and the album one of the most important
soundtracks ever issued. --Gary S. Dalkin

The Graduate

For twenty- one years I have been shuffling back and forth between classrooms and ... more

libraries. Now you tell me what the hell it's got
me.' That's how Benjamin Braddock talked when he
came down from university. Somehow it didn't seem
to be what his father expected from a college
education  and everyone was really appalled when
Ben raped Mrs Robinson (that was her story anyway)
and ran off with her daughter in the middle of her
wedding to someone else...a brilliantly sordid
tale of a young man's search for identity and a
portrayal of the worst-behaved yet most
sympathetic anti-hero of the day.

After 40 Years, Here's To You Mrs. Robinson!

Advantages: Classic, influential, timeless story of seduction and falling in love
Disadvantages: Not a damn thing!

INTRODUCTION: THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE
******************************************************************

I first saw THE GRADUATE when I was in high school, and would you believe me when I said that I didn't care for it? Both of my parents had persuaded me to sit down and watch it, and for some reason or another it just didn't grab me. I had seen plenty ...
...first viewing, I don't think the reasons were that the film was too mature and adult, or that it was dated (as there are elements which make it ingrained in the late 1960s), though I believe it was because I couldn't relate to it. Watching it several times since then, it slowly and surely began to click for me, and now it is one of my all time favorite films. Yes, indeed, THE GRADUATE was one of those films that slowly grew on me, and it's no big ... more

This is Benjamin. He's a little worried about his future.

Advantages: A classic that has to be watched
Disadvantages: For me none - for younger people could be dated

== THE GRADUATE == === 1967 === === FILM ONLY REVIEW === === INTRODUCTION === _"Mrs. Robinson do you think we could say a few words to each other first this time."_ I am showing my age now when I say that one of my favourite films I watched in the cinema in my teens was 'The Graduate ' in 1967. For people of my generation (old!), this film is seen as a classic, and as far as I am concerned it has maintained its legendary status after 40 years. ...
...labelled a classic, (at the moment The Graduate is number 17 in the 100 greatest Film list) it is an often ridiculed and maligned film. 'The Graduate' became the top-grossing film of 1968 and won the Oscar for Best Director (Mike Nichols). The film was nominated for many other Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Hoffman), Best Actress (Bancroft), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography (Robert Surtees), and Best Supporting Actress ...

Mrs Robinson, are you trying to seduce me?

Advantages: A really witty film. Good for a laugh
Disadvantages: It is too short

...are so many run of the mill films out there that when I see something different that is still entertaining I’m impressed. That to me is a good film. The Graduate is one of those films. Maybe it’s just my taste, but I don’t think so. Is it so amazing that a film has amazing special effects or huge explosions? All that really means is that the film has a bigger budget but it is the story that really counts. Look at Waterworld for ...
...also this recent film about the new ice age, The Day After Tomorrow, I was amazed to see people rated well. I am assuming that is because of the effects, which were amazing but you can’t base a film on just that. It was hugely predictable and unrealistic. On top of that a cheesy story about a broken family put there to try and make up for the lack of a good story. My point in all this is that The Graduate, like a handful of others I have seen ...

The education by seduction - a loss of innocence.

Advantages: Anne Barncroft, Dustin Hoffman, Katherine Ross, Funny, Timeless
Disadvantages: I haven't found any.

The Graduate was made in 1967, the same year I was born, so I consider it is of particularly fine vintage. I had watched this film a number of times in the past, but noticed that it had not been on recently. When I saw it for sale on Amazon for only £4.99 I decided that this was just too good to be true and snapped it up. There was a lot of old classic movies being sold on Amazon at Christmas, and I bought up quite a few of them. Reviewing something ...
...ability to do so. The Graduate is more an experience than a film, without seeking to sound too pretentious. The film is 40 years old this year, and many films of this vintage can appear a little grainy, and suffer from the high expectations that we now have with regards to post production, continuity and special effects. The graduate is not a special effects films, but you find that it affects you in a very special way. You are immediately struck ...

If you like shorts this is where to go.

Advantages: Everything about this DVD is an advantage!!!!
Disadvantages: Only if you don't like foreign cinema, and even then you should find something to like in these shorts!

For those of you that love film, and European film in particular, this DVD is a must have. It consists of 16 short films by some of Europe?s best and brightest directors. Most of them were made before the Directors hit the big time (as far as I can tell but I cannot guarantee that as some of them I haven?t heard of), even including film school graduation shorts. This DVD consists of 16 funny, innovative and experimental shorts, all with commentaries recorded mainly by the directors themselves. The short film is incredibly difficult to pull off, economy of script, direction and an ability to convey as much as possible is of vital importance when you need to tell a complete story within a compacted time period. Many a short filmmaker does not pull this off, I?ve seen way too many that are okay or just not entertaining at all ...

Disadvantages: Very graphic sexually and language wise

MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969) DVD (2000) Having recently written reviews on 'The Graduate' and 'Bonnie and Clyde', I was reminded of another classic film from that era - 'Midnight Cowboy'. I had to find a DVD for this film (thanks to Amazon I managed to get one for just £2!!) and watch it again - forty years from when I first went to the cinema to watch it. John Schlesinger's 'Midnight Cowboy' is widely recognized as being one of the most influential and poignant films of the 1960s. It was also the first X rated film to win an Oscar; in fact it won THREE Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay) Both Actors in this film were also nominated for Best Actor and in another rare twist, Sylvia Miles was nominated for Best Supporting Actress with a nearly invisible three minutes of screen time ...
