About the Film
The Good, the Bad and The Ugly, written by Age-Scarpelli, Luciano Vincenzoni and Sergio Leone is the third and last western in Clint Eastwood's spaghetti trilogy.
Director Sergio Leone substitutes for the upright puritan Protestant Ethos, so familiar in Hollywood westerns, with a seedy cynical standpoint towards death and morality, as a team of brutal bandits battle to unearth a fortune buried beneath an unmarked grave.
Clint Eastwood plays "The Good" and is joined by the Ugly "Eli Wallach" and the Bad "Lee Van Cleef". This film is a complex plot of bloodshed and betrayel as it winds its way through the American Civil War to end in the climatic Dance of Death.
This film also boasts a fine Enio Morricone score as a
main theme that reached No. 1 in the world's pop charts.
The basic story is set in Western Times with Clint Eastwood playing the Good, Eli Wallach The Ugly and Lee van Cleef The Bad. The three main players of the film are all after the same prize, the buried treasure, but first they have to find the man who buried it, and then find the treasure, all while the American Civil War is going on.
My Opinion:
Now this has to be by far the best western ever made. The only possible negative vipe you could say about it, is that it is quite long at 2 hours and 41 minutes, but trust me, it is action packed from the beginning until the end and it really does not feel that long.
The basic story is brilliant as you follow the story of three bandits who are all after the same end, the pot of Gold buried at the end of the rainbow (to use figurative speech, actually buried in a grave). The story as you follow the relationship that starts with Clint Eastwood (The Good) and Eli Wallach (The Ugly) with an excellent span to get the bounty that the Sherriff have placed on The Ugly's head. This develops into the following of the story as they try to track down the Gold that has been buried. All in all the story is brilliant and follows through several stages, all of which lead up to an absolutely excellent ending.
Now the characters in this film, Clint is awesome, so awesome that I mention that bit twice. He plays his role of the Good brilliantly - and although he is the Good in this film, he is not completely Good, he has no problem with killing people who need to die, and is willing to double cross his partner to get more money. Lee van Cleef is brilliant as the The Bad and plays his role really well, Eli wallach is also excellent as The Ugly. Once you watch this film you can get a better idea of the characters and how well they interact but they truly do seem to fit the parts they play and are totally believable, which I appreciate so much about this film.
One thing also worth mentioning here is that the soundtrack is brilliant to this film. It has been used elsewhere I believe since, but once I hear the music from this film, it really comes back to me how good this film is, how good the actors are and how well it is directed.
The Director has truly done an excellent job, not only do you get the excellent shoot them ups with Clint and the rest, but you have a good view of part of the American Civil War and the stupidity of it.
I must admit that I do not think that I can praise this film enough. It truly does have everything that you can ask for, good story, excellent actors, great soundtrack, brilliant director and best of all, everything comes together just perfect.
I am trying to sit here and think of something negative to warn people about, and really cannot think of anything except that it is a long film at 2 Hours 41 Minutes. But as I have said, I really have never noticed the length as the film is just brilliant. Of course, if you do not like Westerns, then stay away from this film, although as mentioned in the description, this is not your typical Hollywood western where there is Good and Evil, rather the lines are slightly more blurred with the Good not always being completely Good. It is basically a typical spaghetti western, but by far the best of all of them.
Nothing much else to say, except that the film starts brilliantly, continues brilliantly though the whole middle of the film and then ends Brilliantly.
Verdict: 6 out of 5 (Can I give 6 out of 5 or is this statistically impossible?, nevermind I just have to emphasise just how good this film really is!.)

It is a good film but when it was on TV they always showed it late so I fell asleep before the end. Now it's on DVD that is not a problem any more! Nice review.
