This has to be Sergio Leone’s swan song in the spaghetti western genre. It brings together Clint Eastwood, (once again as the man with no name, or Blondie as Tuco calls him) Lee Van Cleef, (Sentenza, Angel eyes) and Eli Wallach. (Tuco Benedito Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez)
It starts with an unlikely partnership between Eastwood and Wallach, the later being a wanted outlaw, who Eastwood brings in for the reward money, then when Tuco is hanged, Blondie shoots clean through the rope and the two make their escape. Eventually the Blondie gets bored with the arrangement and ends up dumping Tuco in the desert. He vows revenge and makes it out of the desert, then tracks Eastwood down and returns the favour. In the desert Eastwood learns a secret about a missing payroll, that’s worth thousands from a dying man, so Tuco has to make sure Blondie stays alive.
Anyway things happen and the two of them end up in a union prison camp, which is run by the mean and ruthless Sentenza, who learns the secret of the money and takes them all to the graveyard where the loot is hidden.
There is a lot more to this movie than I’ve just outlined but I don’t want to tell you everything do I? The final scene in the graveyard has to be one of the finest moments in Western movie history.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – One of, if not the best Western ever made.
