This was remade in 1980 as a TV movie with Peter Strauss in the Eddie Kagel role. It was that very rare thing, a GOOD remake - I saw at the time it was shown on TV and enjoyed it loads, so I recommend that one too if you can find a copy - I'm not sure it was ever released to DVD, which is a pity.
Paul Muni is one of my favourite, now sadly somewhat forgotten, actors of the 'golden era' of films - his dark expressive eyes and near-hammy acting style, and his quirky half-Austrian (his birthplace) and half-New York gangster accent, always get me, whether in a rare (for him) comedy such as this, or in his more typical serious roles such as two of his best ones ever as star of 'I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang' and the gangster classic 'Scarface', both from 1932.

I had heard nothing like it before, the driving force of the music and lyrics combined entranced me for an hour.
