The Girl Next Door is one of the teen films that seems to be quite common at the moment, or at least since American Pie. The plot is not totally surprising. Basically it stars a nerdy geeky guy(Matthew Kidman), he is nice and clever however he is not really into fashion or sports. So he is something of a social outcast and has to hang around with his mates.
One day a girl moves in next door. She is obviously incredibly attractive and he manages to win her over with his personality. Unfortunately his friends advise him that they have seen her in a porn film, and he is somewhat shocked by this. Taking their advice he decides he is going to have to “bang her”. His plan is to act really rude, get her drunk and take her to a motel. Needless to say she is less than pleased with this.
The rest of the film revolves around his attempts to win her back. There is also a subplot around his plan to get money to bring a Cambodian student over to the USA and his relationship with the girls producer/agent.
One theme of the film is that the girl is not just physically attractive, but she also helps to become more relaxed. From a feminist perspective it is interesting that it is always the guy that gets the hot girl. There aren’t really any films where a fat girl gets with Brad Pitt because she is a great intellectual or a really witty person. Maybe this is because it fulfils the sexual fantasies of Hollywood’s male elite.
This film is quite adult in tone and is definitely not for young children. The film looks into the sex industry, albeit a very sanitized version. There is a little bit of nudity and some sexual references. Having said that the film is not gratuitous when it comes to nudity or sex, although you may not wish to watch it with your parents. The porn star girls are fairly wholesome, there are no drugs and the only violence is a comedy style chase seen.
The acting is okay in this film. The two leads seem convincing, although they aren’t in much else I don’t think(the girl places the American babe that the UK nerd wins in Love Actually – talk about being typecast!) I don’t think there seems to be masses of chemistry and I don’t feel they crackle with sexual tension. Although he is a realistic nerd and she portrays a wholesome porn star.
The character progression is quite extreme. The guy becomes more laid back and confident, as do his friends. The film has clever ending that I shan’t reveal, but it ties up the loose ends well.
Overall I think this is quite a good film. It is not hilarious, not as funny as the American Pie film. I think that the adult theme makes it suitable for an older audience, although this teen flick genre seems better for teens. I don’t think the film is overly original, but it is entertaining in a worth-seeing-once kind of way. It is also very easy to view; there is little need to concentrate as there is not really a complex plot or too many characters to follow. I think because of this you will only really want to watch this film the once.
