I decided it would be nice to have a quiet night in for once with my boyfriend, so I cooked dinner while I left him to go out and rent a DVD for us to watch after we had finished.
He came back with Girl Next Door. I thought it was going to be a typical teen comedy but it had me laughing all the way through it. Being a typical American teen comedy - I thought it was going to be yet another American Pie rip-off as that's what most films are now - even though nothing can ever beat the comedy that was in all three of those films!
Well…
Emile Hirsch plays Matthew Kidman, the high schooler in this comedy. Class president, recently accepted to his dream college, Georgetown University, he is on the right track and knows it. Becoming a little restless during his period of success, he has a burning desire to do something wild. This is when Elisha Cuthbert (Danielle) moves in next door.
One night he watches her strip and she spies him doing it. She comes over to the house and talks to his parents but doesn’t bust him – he obviously thinks that is what she has come round for. Instead Matthews parents suggest that he show Danielle round. So they go driving around the town, she manages to makes Matthew strip in the middle of the street and then she abandons him by driving off with all his clothes!
The pair hit it off – always the way with American films, the nerdy guy always gets the gorgeous girl and vice versa. But she’s beautiful, she’s fascinating and she has the power to help him discover what he lacks in himself.
This also applies to his nerdy friend Klitz (Paul Dano) and his porn-obsessed friend Eli (Chris Marquette), both of who come along when Danielle drags the guys to a wild party. Matthew almost loses Danielle to school heartthrob Hunter (Jacob Young), but he finally gets some guts and barges between them and gives her a great big snog!
All seems well in Matthew’s new world until Eli drops a bombshell…
Danielle used to work as a porn actress!! Which I knew already from reading about it…but never mind!!
He reacts very badly to this and alienates her.
When he goes to apologise, he finds her with her former film producer Kelly (Timothy Oliphant). He has managed to convince Danielle to return to the porn life and takes her off to a convention in Las Vegas. Not content to give up on his love, he gathers all his (3!) pals to head with him to win her back. Klitz and Eli make the perfect sidekicks for Matthew, and a sequence involving the pair at the porn convention has got to be one of the funniest in the film.
It has also got quite a different ending than I would of expected…but I will let you watch the film yourself to find this out...but it's something along the lines of - drugs, sex and schools!
So, without giving too much away I think I will leave it there for now.
But let me warn you…if you are looking for a porn-filled, typical teen movie…you are NOT going to get this with Girl Next Door.
But it is well worth the watch!!!
