Yesterday afternoon, I went to see the movie ‘The girl next door’. I half expected it to be full of young boys longing for a bit or soft porn action and I was not wrong! However, the boys were very wrong, although there was a little nude flesh there was very few sex scenes and the sex scenes that there were, were not that explicit.
The boys which were barely old enough to watch the film, in the back of the cinema kind of added to the whole comic nature of the film! Gasping and whooping in all the right places!!
The director:
The girl next door is directed by Luke Greenfield has previously directed three films before this one, The right hook (2000), The Animal (2001) and Go Sick (2002) which was for TV. Therefore nothing really to shout home about because I haven’t heard of any of these; however this doesn’t mean to say that they are not of reasonable quality! After getting his start as a director for Adam Sandler's production company, 32-year-old director Luke Greenfield has spent the last nine months turning every boy’s dream into a
reality. The Girl Next Door was an original screenplay by the writing team of Brent Goldberg (Van Wilder) and David T. Wagner (My Baby's Daddy). Stuart Blumberg (Keeping the Faith) was brought in to re-work some of the screenplay in its initial stage.
The Cast: Main Characters
Emile Hirsch plays 18 year old Matthew Kidman
Elisha Cuthbert plays Danielle (The Girl Next Door)
Timothy Olyphant plays Kelly the ex boyfriend
James Remar plays Hugo a porn film maker
Chris Marquette plays Eli, Matthew’s friend
Paul Dano Plays Klitz another one of Matthew’s close friends
The Plot:
Matthew the main character is a bit of a geek, he is extremely clever and one day he wants to be the president of the USA. His two best friends Eli and Klitz are also geeks, who are clever and spend all their time studying. They are all 18 years old and just about to graduate from High School and go to college. He realises he is a geek the moment he has to write the thing he remember the most from high school and can’t really think of anything to write. He watches as all the ‘cool’ people bunk off school and go to the beach to celebrate their graduation. He, however, hasn’t even got the guts to get in his car and go to the beach.
Matthew is going through a bit of teenage dilemma when the most beautiful girl he has ever seen walks up the path of the house next door and lets her self in. He can’t believe his eyes; he thinks she is the most beautiful girl in the world.
Later Matthew finds out that she is actually a porn star, but is trying to clean up her act and sort her life out, he feels completely shocked when he found out this about her, but is determined that this won’t change what they have got.
It is a rocky road as being a porn star, especially a good one is a difficult business to get out of, can Matthew convince her to change her ways for good and remain with him or will she flee back to the old life of shame?
This story is a teen-high-school hormones gone mad movie! It is definitely a chick flick but also caters for the guys too, and could thus be called a d*ck-flick too!
My opinion:
I really liked this film, I was initially put off because of all the really bad teen-high-school/young adult American trashy films I have seen just recently (Like how to lose a guy in ten days) but it was thoroughly enjoyable. It was really funny in parts, in other parts it really made you cringe or you were really embarrassed for the people on the screen. It wasn’t a tear jerker; I didn’t at any point feel like I was going to burst into tears!
The story line was obviously a bit far fetched but at the same time it could happen to some really lucky guy, in my opinion although on the outside it appears to appeal to girls I think it is aimed mainly at straight guys, with all the boob and bum action that American Pie doesn’t really have!
It does portray a very stereotypical high school where there are few other people from ethnic minorities, or there may be a token guy or girl who isn’t white thrown in to ensure that people don’t complain. I didn’t think this was very representative of America as it is such a multi-cultural country and there should be more ethnic minorities represented.
There are a lot of twist and turns in the film which I especially like, because things that you think are going to happen don’t and something completely different happen. There are also a lot of flashbacks (or what could have happened type daydreams), which I really like because it kind of plays out what you were thinking in your head!
The characters were good actors, especially the guy that played Danielle’s ex-boyfriend, he fitted his character really well and was a stereotypical view of a porn producer (drinks whisky smokes cigars and goes to lap dancing clubs!)
Overall I would recommend people to go and see this film because it is really funny, a very light hearted American comedy that doesn’t follow the norm as such!
