He opens the door of his car and out pours a stream of bottles, cans etc. Of course, ... ...trial witness across country to the courthouse in which she is to testify. Want more info? Hmmm...well ok, let me try to think...Well we have a movie directed by and starring Clint Eastwood along with the woman in his life at the time Sandra Locke. Clint plays a washed up Phoenix cop who looks like he has been sleeping in the same clothes for about a month and who has a drink problem. He opens the door of his car and out pours a stream of bottles, cans etc. Of course, this means that he is given the job of escorting a mafia trial witness across country to the courthouse in which she is to testify. This witness is Sandra Locke, a prostitute(why does clint always have his wives girlfriends etc. cast as hookers, or molested in some way...hmm) who has more intelligence in her handbag than our dumbass hero has in his whole body. Everyone is out to get them but dear old Clint's character can't see this...well not until the first preposterous action scene. Ths movie excells in presposterous action scenes, but two stand out above all the others. They are in Sandra Locke's house when virtually the whole of the Phoenix police department rolls up outside, gets out of their cars and without another word opens fire on the building. 10 minutes later, with more rounds of Ammunition spent than in the whole of the Second World war the house looks like Swiss cheese and collapses...but never fear because our heros have escaped in a tunnel built by Locke especially for such an occassion...
Like I said, it excells in preposterous action scenes, and Clint is now convinced that they are in trouble and that they can trust no one not even his police force buddies. Off they set then on a perilous road trip across the US which culminates in another preposterous action scene where this time the whole of another state's police force opens fire on their now amroured bus transportation...
Will they get to the courthouse? Will Locke survive to make trial? Dumb qwuestions indeed, we all know the answers, but if you are looking for some extremely OTT action then you probably can't do much worse than this movie. Eastwood is well...Eastwood, but rather than being the all round butt-kicking 'Dirty Harry' kinda guy who you usually see, this time he seems to get his own butt kicked most of the time. He wins one stand up fight though...he got a lucky punch in on the offending woman. Locke adds herself to the list of women in Clint's life who end up prostitutes or rape victims in his movies(anyone ever thought to qeustion that?) and puts in her usual good(ish) performance in her role. he main focus of this movie is however the "Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!" bits and if they were meant to get you thinking OMG! then they work wonderfully. I would say that this movie goes down in history for at least being the one with the most spent rounds of ammunition in any one scene if nothing else...
If you like Clint, or are a fan of action movies then by all means take a look at this, otherwise the whole preposterousness(is that a word?) of it all will probabbly have you giggling. I liked it, but I wouldn't have paid to see it, so perhaps wait for yet another Clint Eastwood season to arrive on terrestrial television before checking it out.
Clint Eastwood plays an alcoholic, dim-witted cop, Ben Shockley, who has to escort an irate prostitute, Gus Mally (Sondra Locke), from Las Vegas to Phoenix so she can testify in a mob trial. Gus immediately warns Ben of the danger that they're in, but he doesn't believe her. He eventually figures out that his superiors want Gus dead and chose him for the job because they thought he'd fail. The two spend most of the film eluding the trigger-happy cops. The banter between Ben and Gus, who initially despise each other, is just as brutal and entertaining as the action set pieces. And when the two finally warm to each other, it's surprisingly effective. Eastwood and Locke made many films together, but THE GAUNTLET features what may be their strongest collaboration. Literal-minded critics may malign the film for its over-the-top explosive action, but it's clear that Eastwood was aware of how outrageous and preposterous the action in the film is. As Jan De Bont would later do with another wildly entertaining and implausible film involving a bus, SPEED, Eastwood here has stripped down the action movie to its bare essence. THE GAUNTLET is a fun ride.
