Ford is prison escapee Dr. Richard Kimble, a Chicago surgeon falsely convicted of killing his wife and determined to prove his innocence by leading his pursuers to the one-armed man who actually committed the crime. Jones (1993 Academy Award and Golden Globe winner as Best Supporting Actor) is Sam Gerard, an unrelenting bloodhound of a U.S. marshal. They are hunted and hunter, and as directed by Andrew Davis, their non-stop chase has one exhilarating speed: all-out.

'The Fugitive' stars Tim Daly ('Wings', 'Storm Of The Century') who plays prison escapee Kimble, wrongly convicted of his wife's murder and determined to find the elusive one-armed man who committed the crime and Mykelti Williamson ('Forrest Gump', 'Heat') plays relentless Lieutenant Gerard. The Sixties were a rich ground for classic American television dramas, mainly of the melodramatic sort based on pretty odd premise - The Invaders, Land of the Giants, Star Trek, Mission Impossible and Time Machine all went for the sci fi slant, but there was another, more ordinary chase drama involving a one armed man who killed a guy's wife, with the husband being the one suspected of the murder - The Fugitive, so called because he was destined to remain on the run forever, hunted for a crime he did not commit, with his only hope being to track down his killer.
Almost invariably this sort of camp drama was equally rich material upon which to base a big budget 90's film version, and undoubtedly when they cast Harrison Ford as Dr Richard Kimble and Tommy Lee Jones as the dogged redneck cop whose business it is to hunt down the fugitive, the powers that be knew what they were doing and pulled off a pretty neat trick - The Fugitive is one of the most exciting and absorbing quasi cop dramas of the last ten years or so and the protagonists certainly provide excellent value in their battle of wits.
Ford went on from his early roles as Han Solo and Indiana Jones to make it very, very big indeed in a load of high tension films like these, while Jones can be pardoned his one aberration as Two Face in the Batman film for a string of high profile and high quality epics. Here the two of them are perfectly cast as the doctor on the run and the man whose job it is to catch him.
Happily it banishes the memory of the old 60's black and white TV hokum from the mind and replaces it with its own universe and reference and puts together a neat little slug of superb cinema which drags you in and leaves you thirsting for more. US Marshals got widely touted as Fugitive 2 with Jones the only constant, but in reality it had nothing to do with this one, more's the pity, for The Fugitive is brilliant, absolutely pigging brilliant.
It's also classic detective stuff with Kimble expertly turning from doctor to detective to suss out the identity of the true felon and in the process clueing good old Tommy in on the truth of the matter.
The plotline is rich and meaty and very enjoyable, but really it's the classy acting and expert staging which really make things cook. The dumb ass cops with whom Jones has to work could get anyone down and you could be forgiven for thinking he's just another chip of the yokel block, but the bluff exterior masks a mind like a razor and a gut instinct which ensures he always gets his man.
The tension is expertly built and developed and kept as taut as you could wish in tracing Kimble's race to find the bad guy before the good guys locate him first. In fact, the only thing which is in any way less than first rate is Ford with the sort of bushy and unkempt beard that surgeons just wouldn't be seen dead with. That apart, this is a flawless, perfectly controlled thriller and should be high on everyone's list of favourite flicks.
Of course, as was the case in Double Jeopardy, Jones, the slightly maverick representative of the establishment has a sneaking feeling throughout that his chosen target was innocent all along although he has to be convinced like all decent cops by the evidence rather than instinct - but you can tell he's hoping against hope that Ford comes up with the kids, which of course he does in the end, but not before finding all the odds heavily stacked against him, after all he's already been convicted in a court of law and had to perform a whole range of death defying stunts to earn his freedom. You get the obligatory twist in the tale and the customary happy ending and all things considered, this is enormously satisfying as a complete work, flawless for the most part, APART FROM THAT NAFF SANTA BEARD...

...thriller come chase movie is the work of director Andrew Davis, who is the director responsible for many of the action movies of Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal. Some might argue that this isn’t the finest CV available, but whatever you might think of his previous work, nobody could ever accuse him of not having the knack of keeping the action moving along at a frenetic pace.

The Fugitive stands proud amongst the increasing number of movies which have taken an old 60s television show and attempted to recapture their former glory on the silver screen. Whereas most have either failed or been at best mediocre, The Fugitive actually manages to work extremely well and whilst lacking the now apparently prerequistite multi-million dollar special effects budget deemed necessary to score a Summer hit, still proved a massive draw ... ...to numerous television showings and the chances are that you will have either seen this but if you've managed to somehow avoid it then you are in for something of a treat... Advantages: The audio is very good Disadvantages: Video is very disappointing
I bought this dvd in blue ray as it is one of my favourite movies. Tommy Lee Jones deservedly won an oscar for his role as the deputy and Harrison Ford is brilliant as Dr Kimble. It's a fast paced, intelligent film which keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end.
Unfortunately I was quite disappointed in this blue ray presentation. The picture quality is dull and the colours are not as crisp as I expected. Some of the darker scenes are impoved but still look a bit grainy,
The audio is quite good and an improvement on the original dvd which I always found to be quite muffled.
It's a shame really because this is an absolutely cracking movie and it could have been done so much better. If you already have this movie on dvd I wouldn;t bother with the blue ray version. ...
Advantages: The action never lets up Disadvantages: None
The Fugitive is probably one of the finest action thrillers ever made, and definately Harrison Ford's best movie. Based on the television series of the same name, the best thing about The Fugitive is that it never lets up the pace, moving along at a thunderous and often breathtaking level. With its quick pacing, rock solid storyline and superb acting this is a great cat and mouse film, with Harrison Ford playing the slipperly fugitive and Tommy Lee Jones trying to track him down with limited success. Both Ford and Lee Jones are on top form throughout, with Jones giving a particularly enjoyable performance as the annoyed and stressed out police officer.

DVD Description
In this near-perfect suspense movie adapted from the popular 1960s television series that starred David Janssen, renowned vascular surgeon Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford – RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, Roman Polanski's FRANTIC) has been falsely accused and convicted--on circumstantial evidence--of his wife's (Sela Ward) murder. While Kimble is being transported to prison, another convict stabs an inattentive guard, causing a massive wreck. Kimble escapes but is hunted by tough U.S. marshal Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones – in an Oscar Winning role). The fugitive from injustice attempts to set the record straight: He transforms himself into a jack-of-all-trades and a man of a thousand faces in a desperate attempt to uncover the truth about his wife's murder and track down the real killer. Spectacular special effects and a pulse-pounding performance by Ford turned Andrew Davis's thrilling film into a blockbuster at the box office, leading to a sequel, U.S. MARSHALS.
