Being an incorrigible Will Smith fan, I have always loved the Fresh Prince of Bel Air sitcoms, with the wise-crack jokes, the lanky dances and Will Smith’s incomparable tongue-in-the cheek acting. Just reviewing this 1990 classic is bringing fond memories back to me, and like I am sure it is for many other viewers, the first season remains undoubtedly the best in the series. I was overjoyed when I finally managed to purchase a DVD copy of the First Season, and I must say that Will Smith’s acting will never cease to impress me. Having seen him in other movies (mainly action-driven ones) years after I first watched him in Fresh Prince of Bel Air, it is quite extraordinary to witness his knee-slapping hilarious jokes that only serve to emphasize on his amazing talent as an actor.
The opening credits are actually a short clip with funky a rap-style song sung by Will Smith himself where he explains how he was sent by his mother to live in a very high-class, very posh corner of Bel-Air with his Uncle Phil and his family. I have to admit that Will Smith’s very first appearance in the show is enough to crack everyone up. Dressed very “smartly” in a brightly stripped neon shirt and blue shorts, and a yellow and blue cap, his first appearance certainly sets the tone for the rest of the series to come.
Season One contains 25 episodes:
1. The Fresh Prince Project 2. Bang the Drum, Ashley 3. Clubba Hubba 4. Not with my Pig, You Don’t 5. Homeboy, Sweet Homeboy 6. Mistaken Identity 7. Def Poet’s Society 8. Someday Your Prince will be in Effect: Part 1 9. Someday Your Prince will be in Effect: Part 2 10. Kiss my Butler 11. Courting Disaster 12. Talking Turkey 13. Knowledge is Power 14. Day Damn One 15. Deck the Halls 16. The Lucky Charm 17. The Ethnic Trip 18. The Young and the Restless 19. It Had to be You 20. Nice Lady 21. Love at First Sight 22. Banks Shot 23. 72 Hours 24. Just Infatuation 25. Working it Out
Among all these series, my personal favorites are the “Fresh Prince Project”, “Not with my Pig”, you “Don’t and Homeboy, Sweet Homeboy”. These are the main three episodes that I personally believe contain the most genuine comical elements, along with a few serious features behind the laughs and jokes. In fact, I particularly appreciated these three particular episodes because it certainly contained very subtle serious messages that are quite unlike the overall spirit of this season. However, despite these quite sober undertones, these episodes still remain hilarious and I must admit that I quite admired the way that such moral lessons were conveyed to the audience without adding any sort of heaviness to the show. For those who are not particularly attracted by comedy series, I would still highly advise you to at least try out the first season. The other episodes are really funny, and I believe that there are various types of humor within this show to suit all tastes. This season in particular contains satire, sarcasm, slapstick and one-line humoristic features. I would particularly emphasize on the High Tea-time scene in the “Bang the Drum Ashley Episode”. This is priceless!
The First season of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air is furthermore the introductory platform for the other endearing characters present within the show. While I was in awe in front of Will Smith’s acting, I was also impressed by the acting of the other members of the Banks family. Will’s uncle Phil was just amazing as the high-class, gruff man with a rather large heart. In addition, his wife and daughters were just as comfortable in playing their respective characters. While some of my friends did not really like the acting of Karyn Parsons, who played Hillary Banks, I must say that I personally liked her acting because I think she certainly portrayed the not-so likable spoiled and haughty girl that she plays in this Season. I would even say that the fact that so many people are not overly fond of this particular character definitely highlights the good job she did in acting her role out.
My personal favorite characters however remain Geoffrey, the Butler and Carlton, Will’s pompous cousin. Geoffrey is simply priceless as the dutiful butler who occasionally considers his line of duty to occasionally interfere in the family’s personal matters and offer some not-so-convenient pieces of advice. What I particularly liked about Geoffrey was the way that he became more than just a butler in the show. His straight posture, his overly-refined way of speaking and courteous manner helped in highlighting the posh attitude in Bel Air, hence contrasting against Will’s straight-out-of-Philadelphia attitude. I would certainly attribute a lot of my laughs to Geoffrey and his fantastic one-liners and Shakespearean dialogues! In addition, Carlton is described as Daffy Duck’s brother by Will and he truly lives up to this description. I must say that his facial expressions are so comical and so genuinely pompous that no one will be able to keep a serious face for more than five minutes in front of that extremely talented actor. I believe that his trademark in the show will remain the way that he continuously twists his face and rolls his eyes at his cousin’s many eccentricities.
And of course there is Will himself. He is a carefree kid from Philadelphia who is not at all impressed by his Uncle’s wealth and status. However, as the series evolve, he is depicted as being more than just a comical character and can in a way, be compared to his uncle: Both of them have an extremely kind heart despite their different exteriors and when the two of them have scenes together, I can assure you that you will be bent double in your chair with laughs
Overall this is most definitely one of the best seasons of the show. It came out quite a long time ago in 1990; it still remains a legendary classic with memorable moment such as an uninvited guest being drop-kicked across the front lawn! Will Smith’s hilariously colorful attires contrasted with the serious suits of Phil Banks is just more than enough to provide hours of entertainment of the whole family. Most definitely one to watch!

...Season one takes it all the way back to 1994, and it’s hilarious to see the fresh-faced cast (even Uncle Phil looks young). For a tenner, it’s a steal!
WHAT IS IT ABOUT: An American sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air stars a young Will Smith as a street wise Philadelphia lad who goes to live with his posh relatives in Bel Air. The show is a comedy that draws much of its fun from the way Will clashes with the Banks family's way of life, particularly ... ...still watched by teens around the country, who get as much enjoyment out of it now that I did ten years ago. Why is that? Because comedy never dies, and this show is great comedy. The show is a character based comedy, that succeeds because of the humorous interactions that arise from wildly different characters: Will - Will is a cool, street wise lad who is the role model of the show; an instant hit with teens everywhere, he is young, good looking, ...

As the 1980s turned into the 1990s a new star was born when rapper/actor Will Smith donned the guise of THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR. Shipped out to California to live with wealthy relatives, he sets about teaching his adopted family some street-smarts, while his original reason for being there--to learn some old fashioned beliefs and values--rapidly falls by the wayside. His Aunt Vivian ((Janet Hubert-Whitten) and uncle Philip Banks (James Avery) can't control him, and the laughs continue to flow as The Fresh Prince attempts to get everyone else to fit in around him, including cousins Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro), Hilary (Karyn Parsons) and Ashley (Tatyana Ali). Now a legendary part of early-1990s television scheduling, this release includes the first season in its entirety.
