It is amazing how Brooklyn neighborhood looks Gothic, in the film “The Forgotten”, like we are not talking about that part of New York. Julianne Moore looks beautiful, in the environment of the fall shadings, when it comes to a set film design.
This entirely new Julianne Moore star vehicle, "The Forgotten" starts off as thriller that plays around with vanishing memory. But after its intriguing setup, it flies off totally unexpectedly into a wildly different direction. After a promising start, this missing-child film, from director Joseph Ruben enters into a clone of an other one utter "X-Files" episode.
However, Julianne Moore's character gets you emotionally drawn, as you start watching the film, which is happening thanking to an actress, not the film itself. But yet, this is very powerful story about strong connection between mother and her child. Moore plays very believable role of mother, trying to find the truth against all forceful odds from an other world. This is unpredictable plot in the daring mix of genres.
Telly is mother with erased memory, haunted by the loss of her 8-year-old son Sam, who died in a mysterious plane crash 14 months earlier. She keeps the memory on him alive through a daily ritual of looking on his pictures and keepsakes. A depression that Telly is constantly in, becomes further complicated when both her husband and therapist start claiming that her son was never even born. The things are getting more complicated when evidence of the boy's existence starts to clash, disappearing. But for that, even more, Telly becomes concerned that there is a government conspiracy behind it, not realizing that the truth is more horrific. She gets close to a friend who also lost his daughter in the same plane crash. That is the moment, when things really get rolling, because apparently he doesn’t seem to remember clearly of her neither. What kind of conspiracy we are talking about here?
A cruel, cynical use of a mother's love for her child, as a plot, to point out an intelligence-insulting sci-fi closure. A theological theme of a film would put Lucifer instead of Aliens. It is all the same. Who can really dare to confirm that aliens out there are evil and bad? Especially with all evil done by humans. The special effects in this movie are poor, but very effective. Probably because film director wanted to present an utterly scary idea of emotion-less aliens, rather than to make spectacle. Which is why most of people comparing this film with episodes of X-Files.
As an adult film, with adult plot, U doubts that children or teenagers would enjoy in it, especially if there is no attractive special effects. “The Forgotten” is first of all, drama. This film is still available in the cinemas just as on DVDs.
