Stranger things are afoot; objects mysteriously appear on the seashore, things that seemingly have the magical power to burst into flames despite having been underwater for centuries. Nick Castle and his girlfriend, Elizabeth, slowly begin to piece together the story of their forefathers, who allowed the death of a boatful of lepers so that they could set up the island without any of the 'unclean' on it. Now, it seems, the lepers are coming back to seek their revenge by means of the fog...Can justice be done without more death?
I seem to have caught up with five years of remakes in the past month or so; The Fog 2005 is a re-make of the 1980 John Carpenter film of the same name. Not having seen the original film, I cannot compare it with this version; however if it is anything like as bad as this one, I have no particular desire to see the original anyway.
Tom Welling (of Smallville fame) plays the main character, Nick Castle. I say main character because he does appear on-screen most frequently; however, we really don't get to see all that much of him and there is certainly no time for any character development. As it is, he could have walked straight out of the Smallville set and straight into this one - there really is no attempt to make sure that he isn't type-cast - possibly a deliberate plan on the part of the director. He provides eye candy for the girls, but that's about as much praise as I can give him - not that he is at fault for that, he is convincing enough within the confines of his role.
Maggie Grace plays Elizabeth Williams, Nick's girlfriend. Some may recognise her from Lost and she has recently been in Taken, but I have not seen any of her previous work. This isn't a film to separate her from the masses. Like Welling, she is convincing enough in the role, there just isn't very much for her to work with, and her Famous Five-like manner of falling over clues all the time is a bit silly. Selma Blair, an actress I have a great deal of time for, has a small role as Stevie, the presenter of a local radio show. Stevie could have been an interesting character, she is quirky and feisty, but again, is given no room to perform.
I didn't really have any preconceptions about the film before watching it. I suppose I was slightly intrigued to know how a fog could turn into something that killed, but as fog can be very creepy if you're stuck in it in the middle of nowhere, I thought that it was fairly acceptable to be the basis of a horror/thriller movie. Unfortunately, the cross-over between an attack of bad weather and the carnage that this fog leaves behind has not been executed very well here. The fog, for a start, looks fake, more like smoke than any fog I've ever seen. And then the reasons for the fog are never really fully explained. Okay, some people did something terrible a hundred years before - why does that result in a killer fog? If the film had been better made, I probably wouldn't have asked myself that question. As it is, the film leaves a lot to be desired and I didn't think it worked well as a story at all.
Then there are the special effects. I have watched any number of bad horrors with terrible special effects, and have forgiven them because of the period in which they were made, the low budgets or simply because the story and performances made up for it. Here we have a film made in 2005, yet the special effects are really unrealistic, and I'm not talking about the smoke-like fog here. The 'lepers' just look silly, as if they had just walked out of a bad fifties horror film and I just couldn't find them at all scary. The only time I flinched was when an arm reached out to someone through the pipes of a sink - this was actually quite well done because it was so unexpected, but wasn't enough to make me like the film overall.
There is a rating of 15 on the film, which I think is fair. There are a number of deaths, some of them not very pretty, but because the special effects aren't that life-like, they aren't anything like as scary as they could have been. Still, it is worth vetting if you are concerned about your child's film preferences. There is also a dead dog, which could be upsetting for some. I find it really annoying that today's horrors always seem to feature a dead animal - I am sure none are really harmed in the making of the film, but it just seems so unnecessary to me.
There are a number of special features. First a selection of deleted scenes, none of which are vital to the film, but did help reinforce a couple of plot threads for me. Then there are three features, covering subjects such as why the film was re-made (I wasn't convinced), how some bits were changed to up-date the story and how the special effects were made. None of these features are particularly gripping - but then they would probably mean a lot more to anyone who actually enjoyed the film. Finally, there are a number of trailers for films such as The Da Vinci Code and The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
On the whole, I didn't like this film very much. Too much was unexplained, and with the strange special effects, I just couldn't get into the spirit of the film at all. I can find something of merit in most films - and I've watched some rubbish ones in my time - but there really isn't much here at all. I suppose special effects aside, it is visually well-filmed, but not enough to make up for its other failures. Director Rupert Wainwright may have thought he was doing the world a favour by re-making this film; personally, I will he had just left well alone. I have no desire to see this film again, or the original on which it was based. If you really enjoy bad horror, then you might just get a kick out of this; otherwise stay clear.

Having enjoyed the original so much I couldn’t wait to see the remake but was left very disappointed. Having seen comments made on it such as “scarier than the original”, “a must for fans of the first” and “a remake worthy of the original” I had great expectations for it but it was actually in my opinion very poor.

...came close to deserving it. The first thing you have to ask when reviewing this film is have you seen the original. I have. There's going to be lots of spoilers so lets just dive right in. We have Selma Blair who looks about 13, and is no Adrienne Barbeu. She's playing Stevie Wayne and there isn't going to be any "Chased up the lighthouse" sequence in this version sadly. Advantages: Selma Blair is the ONLY good thing about this movie Disadvantages: I don't know if i can fit them all in here
The original of 'The Fog' was released back in 1980 and it was genuinely terrifying, still is to this day. When the remake was announced i was actually looking forward to it because i believed that even though the original was a good movie, it could have been improved on. Was it? No. Was there a point to remaking this movie if this is what they had planned. No. Is there anything they did right? Yes, they hired Selma Blair who plays 'Stevie Wayne' ... ...beginning to annoy me!
The movie opens slowly and continues that way for it's entire length. A fog is beginning to descend over the town of Antonio Bay but it's not your usual run of the mill fog. This has something in it, something that will terrify the life out of you...well...hmm. 100 years ago, a ship led by pirates and carrying family members of the pirates was attacked near Antonio Bay's rocky coastline for some reason and the ship was sunk ...

...drawn out story. The original 'the fog' was scary but the new realease to be honest was a bit of a shambles. The story is generally about a thick fog that covers a small town near the sea and people have been killed in the fog, it all revolves around a girl who used to live there and has now come back to the town and thats when the fog begins again. I didnt rate the actors at all. There was no actors in the film that i really recognized and thought ... ...character (Elizabeth Williams) These were the two main characters and really it was not up to standard at all.
I must admit that the special effects were pretty good in this film. The effects of flying knives, thick fog, brocken windows and footsteps. Also the mystery people in the fog was pretty effective and generally realistic. The soundtrack was satisfactory. It didnt really build suspense as some of the songs played were modern, not standard ...

Advantages: Theme tune, characters, and childhood memories Disadvantages: Only 5 episodes on DVD, animation is an acquired taste
If you're a child of the 1980s like myself, I'd be surprised if you don't remember Willy Fog. Although it was originally shown in Spanish in 1983, it was first shown in the UK in 1987 when it was on Children's BBC, and dubbed over in English. I think the series was popular in many countries, I remember watching an episode in Italian when on holiday in Venice!
The series has 26 episodes, and the first five are on this dvd. I bought the set (of five) as each one came out, but now you can buy a box set with all of the episodes which might be more convenient (put it this way, you can't just buy this one dvd as you won't find out what happens). However, I didn't mind the wait between dvds. After all, when it was shown there was only one episode per week. As a 5-6 year old, the 26 weeks seemed to go on for a lifetime!

John Carpenter is a master of tension and suspense. In the hands of a lesser director, The Fog would have been just another generic horror film, (see the execrable 2005 remake if you don't believe me) but Carpenter instead manages to create an oppressive and unsettling film with his mix of eerily-lit shots, brooding off-screen menace and his trademark pulsing synths that ebb and flow throughout, gradually building up anxiety in the viewer on an almost subconscious level.
The story takes place in the sleepy Californian coastal town of Antonio Bay, a settlement that is said to have been formed in 1880 by a group of men who caused a local ship to be wrecked by lighting a beacon and driving it onto the rocks, causing crew to drown before plundering the ship of gold and using it to establish the town. The local church houses a huge gold ...

The fog is a horror film from Director John Carpenter, this is one my favourite films.
The fog is not a blood- soaked, gore filled horror film of usual. It cranks up the tension with suspense, giving it a eerie atmosphere. The film can be slow paced, but this creates a sense of threat, leaving you knowing that the fog hides many dangers. The fog has a life of it's own, it's presences accompanied with threatening music. The film also leaves most of the scares to the viewers imagination.

DVD Description
An island off the Oregon coast is the setting for this salty yarn of ghosts, lepers, betrayal, vengeance, and teen angst. A fog-enshrouded schooner from 1865 returns from the bottom of the sea to wreak vengeance on the locals of the island, and it's up to local DJ Stevie Wayne (Selma Blair), her charter-boat-captain lover, Nick (Tom Welling, from TV's SMALLVILLE), and his wayward girlfriend, Elizabeth (Maggie Grace, from TV's LOST), to save the day. All three are related to the town's founding fathers, with whom the ship-bound ghosts have an ancient score to settle. What that score is no one seems to know, but they need to find out, fast. DeRay Davis (BARBERSHOP) provides comic relief as Nick's lusty first mate, but the real scene stealer here is the fog itself, which is much more animated than in the 1980 John Carpenter original. Thanks to some nice CGI work, it slithers in, around, and under everything. Though gussied up with an angst-rock soundtrack and beautiful young TV actors, THE FOG is, at heart, a good old fashioned ghost story, replete with period costumes and inter-dimensional romance. Director Rupert Wainwright (STIGMATA) is good at capturing little details like the eerie tinkling of deep-sea fishing hooks hung out to dry, and the textures of moisture-beaded shower stall doors. John Carpenter and his partner, Debra Hill co-creators of the first FOG served as producers.
