...a younger age may remember the Goosebumps book: Why I'm Afraid Of Bees, which told of a boy who gets stuck in the body of a bee after an experiment goes wrong. If, like me, you thought that was scary, you should meet its bigger, nastier brother: David Cronenberg's 1986 Sci-Fi / Horror classic, The Fly. Jeff Goldblum plays the scientist Seth Brundle, who, along with a pretty funky 80s hairdo, has a teleport machine which could render conventional ...

Veronica's editor at her newspaper (played by John Getz), who also happens to be her ex-boyfriend, is sceptical about the whole thing, and is getting jealous about her spending the night with the mad scientist. After a bit of tweaking, Seth manages to get a baboon successfully transferred from one ...

Fly to new beginnings

Advantages: Great story and acting
Disadvantages: none

The Fly is a horror/science fiction film directed by David Cronenberg. The screenplay was written by Charles Edward Pogue and David Cronenberg, which was based on a story written by George Langelaan. The film was released in 1986. This is a loose remake of the 1958 film The Fly, starring Vincent Price. A sequel was made to this film, called The Fly 2. This film is about Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum), a scientist researching the field of matter teleportation. ...

Genna Davis plays Brundle's love interest, journalist Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis). The supporting cast includes John Getz and David Cronenberg. This is a creepy film with outstanding make-up for Goldblum's monster. Cronenberg manages to achieve the right balance so that we feel both pity and loathing ...

Touching romance and gruesome effects

Advantages: The relationship between Seth and Veronica, the gruesome effects.
Disadvantages: It does look aged now - you can't avoid that.

The Fly is a remake of a 50s B-movie which involves a teleportation experiment gone wrong. Somehow a fly gets trapped in the machine with the poor scientist, Seth (played by Goldblum). The after effects have him marvelling in some new-found powers but, far from Spiderman-like transformation, little does he know he's slowly and grotesquely turning into a monster rather than some superpowered hero. This film largely surprised me. It has definitely ...
...me about this film was the relationship between Seth, the scientist and Veronica, the journalist. It was actually quite touching. In some way I can see such deterioration of a man having some metaphorical significance in the real world outwith B-movie horror. Forgive me if you hate the comparison, but a lot of couples see their other half deteriorate due to diseases of the body and mind and it must be quite heartbreaking. Not that I am suggesting ...

The Most Beautiful Film Ever

Advantages: Incredible Acting, Special Effects and Story Line
Disadvantages: Is in Chinese/Manderin and may put people off reading subtitles

**What Is It?** The House of Flying Daggers (In Chinese, is called Shi Mian Mai Fu) DVD is the award winning Chinese tragedy. The DVD format i am reviewing is for Region 2 (Europe DVD Players) but it doesn't differ to the movie (it just decides which DVD's can be played in which players) **Why Watch It?** I was drawn to watching House of Daggers after watching Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon and Memoirs of a Geisha. I adore these Chinese films and have become a huge fan. So i definately wasn't going to miss the chance to see this one. Also having a look at the other reviews on Ciao! convinced me to go out and buy it. **What Language?** Yes, it is in Chinese/Manderin. This didn't put me off at all but it put my brother off from watching it (he's dyslexic) so can't read the subtitles quick enough. If your a good reader you ...

Two Disc Edition for Doube the fun!

Advantages: Great photography and fight scenes
Disadvantages: unrealistic in parts, and also confusing

means you miss parts of the film. Price: Astonishingly, I picked this film up about a week ago, ((so only a couple of months after its original DVD release) at London Paddington Station) in an offer making it worth £6.66. The offer was 3 DVD's for £20, so I got myself I, Robot, Dodgeball, and House of Flying Daggers. This a brilliant offer, bettered by the fact the HoFD House of Flying Daggers) DVD was the '2 Disc Collectors' Edition' Bonus Disc - The DVD I bought came with an extra disc, contain all kinds of special features. The first disc contains the film, with the option of having the commentary on/off. The second disc contains? Review of House Of Flying Daggers (DVD)

The cinematic masterpiece of the decade

Advantages: Brilliant just brilliant, everything
Disadvantages: nothing

Ok to start off I would like to point out that I am reviewing the 2 disc edition of this DVD as that's the one I suggested. As you have already probably guessed from my 'Hero' review I am a big fan of foreign films. I am also a massive fan of martial arts, so when these two collide and then you mix in a bit of Ziyi Zhang you get an absolute masterpiece that is House of Flying Daggers. Originally I borrowed this DVD from my friend, who is also obsessed with foreign films, and he told me this was a film that I would love. So I nicked the DVD off him, sat down on a Sunday afternoon with a bag of popcorn and had my very own little cinema experience. House of Flying Daggers comes from genius director Yimou Zhang who also directed Hero. The film starts off with a bit of history, basically saying that a group of rebels known as The House ...
