Michelle Rodriguez, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, and of course the bad dude himself, Vin Diesel. Needless to say, there's going to be a lot of speed and demolition, especially in the fantastic opening truck hijack executed at amazing speeds by Dominic (Diesel) and his sexy partner in crime, Letty (Rodriguez). When Letty gets killed, it's revenge time, with the path of the bad guy leading Dominic back across the border to Los Angeles (where he's still wanted by the law) and into a high-stakes street race in which he's teamed up with his old nemesis, undercover fed Brian O'Conner (Walker). As in the original, Brewster makes a foxy love interest for Walker (she's Dom's kid sister), but there's not much time for kissing: there's races to be won, huge accidents to cause, and shady smuggling plots to foil.

Paul Walker and Vin Diesel star in this action packed, racing orientated blockbuster.
Set in L.A., 'The Fast and The Furious' tells of an undercover cop (Paul Walker, aka "Brian O'Connor") who is sent in to investigate the thefts of expensive electronic appliances and entertainment systems from hijacked, moving trucks. He sets about getting into the life of Domonic Toretto (Diesel), an infamous street racer, and one of the top suspects in the case. Along the way, O'Connor gets sucked into the gritty underworld of illegal street racing, facing triads, armed truckers and falling for Torettos sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster).
The films winds through many different locations and keeps the audience on the edge in a whodunnit manner, and shows the torment being inflicted on O'Connor, as he is torn between justice, love, his job, and his friends (not to mention his new found need for speed).
Despite some less than average acting moments from several of the cast, on the whole it is an entertaining and truly exhilerating film. The action scenes are well thought out, there are several moments of comic genius and simply the rorty screaming of twin exhausts and elegant lines of high-speed, decalled road machines are is enough to make anyone enjoy this film.
Naturally this would appeal to car fans, including brilliant drag racing moments, cop chases through back alleys, a climactic life or death encounter with a speeding truck, and many more. The cars used are in essence, beautiful. They are based around Japanese tuner cars but have been made especially for the film and are uniquely fascinating as individual works of art. For the classic fan, there is also an appearance from a 1968 Dodge charger, to really get your juices going.
At the end of the movie, there is a short preview film to lead into the sequel, 2Fast2Furious. This is a good bit of fast-forwarded storyline and pleasantly bridges the gap between the two films. Director, Rob Cohen, provides an interesting and in depth commentry on the film as part of one of the extra sections of the dvd. One nice feature (albeit less than informative) was the guide to 'tricking out a hot import car', and was not much more than an excuse to show of some more of the automotive eye candy that this film provides in abundance
The deleted scenes are brief, but as with any deleted scenes, well worth watching if only out of curiousity. The multiple camera angles option is brilliant and can boost enjoyment of watching the film a second time by far. Behind the camera footage is average but interesting all the same, and covers many aspects of the films production and filming.
Unfortuneatly, the DVD-rom features didn't all work as planned (as in I could not gain access to them). In fact, I couldn't play the disk at all on my PC, despite being sure that I have all the necessary hardware and software installed correctly. Oh well, I shan't put this down to the fault of the disk as my computer probably hasn't been set up correctly by me, but it's still a point worth considering just incase.
The film lasts 102 minutes and runs with a screen ratio of 2.35:1, oddly enough the two selectable languages to view the film in are English and Hungarian (I don't know why, maybe the films have a large hungarian following?).
Subtitles are available in:
Arabic Bulgarian Croatian Czech Danish English Finnish Greek Hebrew Hindi Hungarian Icelandic Norwegian Polish Slovene Swedish Turkish
High sound quality is courtesy of Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound.
All in all I think this is a brilliant DVD of one of my favourite films. The Turbo-Charged edition has so many bonus features over the basic DVD (multi-camera angles e.t.c.) and the user loading interface is artistically and artistically designed featuring background music from the soundtrack. The DVD is rated as a 15 (as was the original film), and is well worth a look.
"...An intensely involving entertainment..." (Los Angeles Times, p.8, 22/06/2001)
"...It's a rare treat to see actual heavy metal flip out of control and go crunch....It captures the late-night adrenaline rush of an underground sport that requires beating the law as well as your opponents..." (USA Today, p.4E, 22/06/2001)
"...Gritty and gratifying....A really good exploitationer....An attractive cast led by an imposing Van Diesel keeps the personal scenes quite watchable..." (Variety, p.19-24, 25/06/2001)
DVD Description
THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS is a nitro-burning joyride that makes outstanding use of special effects, innovative camera work, and a nonstop throbbing soundtrack. From the opening sequence--a high-speed, high-tech truck robbery--the film never drops below the red line. Roaring along at breakneck speed, Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew meet on the streets of L.A. each night to show off their high-powered racers. When new guy Brian (Paul Walker) wants to add his fuel to the fire, he can't cough up the cash to race, but offers up his car as collateral. In their tiny jacked compacts, Dom, Brian, and Edwin (Ja Rule) burst into a high-gear race with Brian nearly beating perennial champion Dom. But in the final moments, he loses the race and his car. Brian's debt is quickly cleared, however, when he saves Dom both from the cops and from a potentially violent encounter with Johnny Tran (Rick Yune), a rival gang lord. Dom takes Brian under his wing--a decision that disgusts his gang but delights his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster). The gang never suspects that Brian is not who he seems: he is actually an undercover cop, and though he wishes otherwise, he's there to bust Dom for committing the armed truck robbery witnessed in the opening scenes.
