This film is brilliant – but caters for a limited audience. At the risk of sounding sexist, this is definitely a film for men – a steady combination of fast cars, loud music, violence and (occasionally) women makes it the most testosterone-filled film I know. It has quite a few flaws – the main one being the pretty dire plot. However, it is not meant to be a thought-provoking film – it is purely a film about a gang of adrenaline junkies who get their kicks from racing each other at unbelievable speeds. The film follows an undercover police officer that is attempting to infiltrate an underground street racing gang. He then predictably falls in love with the gang leader’s sister and this then leads to him having to chose his priorities – career or street cred. Have a guess which one he chooses? This plot is an excuse to bring in the best car chases and races seen in a film at every opportunity. The film stars up-and-coming action star Vin Diesel as the leader of the gang, and plays the charismatic Dominic Toretto (called Dom in the film). His rival, and the cause of most of the action in the film, is Johnny Tran (played by Rick Yune). The entire film is jam-packed with action and car chases, but this is to the obvious loss of plot. However, this is not a bad thing – I love this film, and went to the cinema two times to see it before it came out on DVD. It is even better if you have surround sound – all of the engines and booming hip-hop music make this film a treat for the ears. There are quite a lot of extras, though personally, I hate documentaries about films so they don’t all appeal to me. The best features are the music videos – Ja Rule with Ashanti, Caddilac Tah (another good rapper), and Saliva (a rap-metal band). I would recommend this film to most guys (and girls) who are not into chick-flicks and do not require a complicated plot to enjoy a film. However, if you are an extreme film critic with high standards, you will find yourself predicting everything a minute before it actually happens (which definitely ruins a film and annoys anybody you are with), so I would not recommend this to you. To summarise, this is a cool and exciting film that should be watched with a group of mates, a good sound system (optional of course) and a few beers.
