Sometimes you really do not not want to think too hard when you rent a movie, or decide to go out to the cinema to watch one. Sometimes you do not care if the plot is thinner than Ally McBeal on a diet and little more than a clothes peg upon which to hang a bunch of mindless stunts upon. Sometimes you need a movie like The Fast And The Furious.
There is no plot here to speak of. Well, ok, there is a small one. A bunch of street racers are terrorising the city by driving at high speed in their souped up sports cars etc. This is the least of the problems surrounding them though because they are also suspected of being behind a bunch of truck hi-jacks where hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of electronic equipment is being stolen. On the case is undercover cop Brian Spindler(Paul Walker) who tries to infiltrate a particular gang thought to be responsible lead by Dom Toretto(Vin Diesel). However its not that simple because a rival asian gang is also in the mix and they might be responsible as well and Spindler is rather getting to like the adrenaline junkie life of these guys and falling for Toretto's sister(Jordana Brewster) to boot.
Of course all this is handled with the subtlelty of a sledgehammer in the face, and the only reason for watching the movie is the adrenaline pumping race 'n' chase scenes. You would have to argue against Cohen's use of a camera which feels like it is about to shake itself apart to convey the speed that these guys are travelling at but even so - it certainly gets the adrenaline pumping. In between these scenes you have the usual macho dialogue with everyone trying to match Vin Diesel's gravelly tones and discussing cars and engines in lingo which for the most part lost me(not into cars very much). Of course when the movie does try to be poignant, or serious then it really does crash and burn but thankfully these moments are few and far between.
The Fast and The Furious is a true guilty pleasure. Its blatantly cr*p but at the same time its one of those movies which you can sit down and no-brain to 'til your hearts content. Worth a watch if you want to see a movie and are tired of thinking.

An excellent opinion selling the 'naffness' of this movie superbly. A great read all round and funny to boot. That Ally MacBeal remark was classic. Welcome to my CoT. Steve.

I wanted to see this before reading your op, but now i want to go and see it EVEN more!!! I must get round to watching it, a very helpful op. Thanx for the read - Sien ;)
Advantages: Cars, women, great stunts, fights and a great plot. Disadvantages: Maybe a slighty worn out genre, but still great. The ending could be better! Though I won't go into that and spoil it!
Advantages: Back to the cruising scene with great cars, great sound systems and great girls. Action packed Disadvantages: It's not as good as Fast and Furious, poor acting, unrealistic story
Advantages: Plenty of action, nice effects, Vin Diesel, no need to think too hard. Disadvantages: Not really any, unless you're expecting something that it's not.
