This film is meant o be based on a true story of something that occurred in Silverspring Maryland USA in 1949. The dvd itself is a flip disc with the film on side A and the extras on side B but for some reason mine works the opposite way round as on mine things are reversed. Everyone will no doubt have heard of this movie so with little ado I am going to tell you about the movie then give you some further details of the dvd features and my feelings on the movie etc.

The film starts in Northern Iraq on a historical Excavation site. You see a few scenes till it changes to Georgetown USA. It starts with the mother hearing some strange noises in the attic but she just thinks that it is rats. A bit later she is talking to her daughter in the basement where she see?s a Ouija board and asks her daughter if she has been playing with it. She says yes and her mum puts the board down to try it but the counter flies to her daughter who tells her mum that Captain howdy didn?t want to play with her mum. From here we see Father Damien Karrass having a few drinks talking about how he feels he may be losing his faith. This is to do with personal problems. More noises can be heard and her mum investigates the loft taking a candle with her for light, for a moment after she looks about the candle flame flares up so things are starting to happen.

We go back to a scene in the church and see the desecration of a statue in the church and Father Karrass visiting his mother whom is in an asylum. This is the turmoil he is in, as he wants to take better care of her but can?t due to lack of funds with being a priest. Unfortunately though she passes on. We first see things happening with the daughter Raegan where she walks into the room as they are singing at the piano. She says you are going to die up there then pees herself. Her mum bathes her then puts her to bed when we hear her screaming for her mum and she runs in to see the bed bouncing violently. This prompts her to tak e her to the hospital for a check-up. The doctor thinks that it is a brain problem and takes some scans but they show nothing.

Back home and things get worse so she phones the doctor and Raegan gets so violent that it takes a few of them to just hold her still for the doctor to sedate her. Her mum gets more stressed and agitated and we see more occurrences as the lights flicker and her bedroom starts to get freezing. A psychiatrist comes to visit and tries to hypnotise her. We first see the physical changes to Raegan?s face as she attacks him.

The police visit the home to ask questions about a death of a friend, and from her we see the daughter in the much discussed scene with the cross, after this she grabs her mums head and puts it somewhere telling her to lick her. She pulls away with her face covered in blood. He goes to see raegan and she is strapped to the bed. She says that there is more than one demon in there and claims to be the Devil. At this point she says his recently deceased mum is there as well. Raegan starts to change physically from here as her looks worsen. He splashes her with holy water and she speaks in a different language but the priest tricked her as it turns out to be tap water but she also tricks him as she is not speaking a different language but English backwards. Father Karrass eventually goes to ask for the exorcism to take place and it is granted as long as father Merrick is there as well.

Things really start to heat up here as they start to read from the bible. She screams as the bed rocks violently. The lights flicker and her voice takes on a new tone. We see her head rotate a full 480 degrees as she breaks her bonds and start to levitate above the bed. They throw holy water at her and her eyes whiten. Father karras binds her hands.

The End

Summary

This is a movie that is over 25 years old and has stood the test of time. It can still keep you engrossed just as much now as it did audiences when it was first released. I was lucky enough to get my copy for less than £8.00 from E-bay but would have happily paid full price for this one. With the movie being digitally remastered the picture quality is also excellent along with the sound quality. It has made the transition to the dvd format with perfection and with the amount of details that you can pick up from the extras you can see just how hard it was for the cast to make this movie. They go into some detail to tell you how they helped create shocked looks on the actors faces for example they used to suddenly fire a shotgun when you were not expecting it to get you to look frightened like you would if you were in the situation that they were meant to be in. A classic masterpiece that has been digitally remastered to further enjoy this film. I believe that it is well worthy as an addition to any movie collection and as such I?d say it is a must have for all horror fans. A+++

You're summary and features part of the review is very informative and helpful, although you have again given away the plot to the storyline so that anyone who hasn't seen it already may well as not bother now! I would imagine though that most have seen this brilliant horror movie, they don't come much better than this. Deb x
