i'm sara scalper, a horror film/tattoo junkie from the u.s. don't care much about holding to any sort of standards (no caps!), just here to share my experiences and hopefully help people. i own 500+ horrors, so i kind of have the genre down haha.

this movie may be from the 70s, but it has aged extremely well. the film quality is still spectacular, the plotline creepy as hell, and (with the extra scenes added in) the revamped version is a welcome addition to any horror collection along with the original. unfortunately, none of the sequels measure up to the horror of the first.
father marrin, a priest, is at an archeological dig when a statue is found of an ancient demon, pazuzu. this demon is released into the world, and takes possession of reagan, the small daughter of a famous actress mother, chris mcneill (ellen burstyn), through her fiddling with a ouija board ("captain howdy"). what ensues is head-spinning, pea soup barfing, cross-humping goodness. i don't want to discuss too much of the events involved in reagan's possession (for fear of dulling the surprise and horror), i'll only say that she transforms from a sweet, innocent girl into a hideous demonic beast that will make yr skin crawl. two priests (the above-mentioned one and father karras) attempt to exorcise the demon from the little girl, but things don't go quite as they planned.
there are some moments in this story that are not as shocking as they were back in the 70s, but quite a few of them still leave yr mouth gaping ("let jesus f*** you!")...the film still has a great impact on anyone who sees it. the settings are very realistic, the characters well-developed, and the plot thick as as all get-out. definitely recommmended.

The book kept me on the edge of my seat. Which is odd for a book!? Found the film a little lack lustre. Prefer Exorcist 3. Although I haven't seen the new edit and expect that to be better.

It sure is a classic but it is years since I saw it. Maybe I should watch again to see if it stands the test of time.
