The Exocist was originally made in 1973 and was subsequently banned in the UK for approximately 20 years. Described by many as 'the scariest movie of all time' and as the greatest movie ever made'- radio 1, we shall see if its what is cracked up to be.

I have the DVD ( the year 2000 version), in my in my hands. On the back the synopsis basically describes that 'Director William Friedkin and producer/ screen writer Peter Blatty have revisited the Exorcist to integrate 11 mins of scenes and images deleted before the film's 1973 release.' This film is for persons over the age of 18. Its approximately 127 minutes long and the disc is double sided. The film is on one side and the other has the special feature which include;
  • an interactive menu *trailers *scene access
  • feature length commentary by the Director
  • TV Spots *Radio Spots

Available to watch in English and Italian with subtitles in either language as well as Finnish, Icelandic, Bulgarian, Romanian and Arabic.***Characters***

Mum- otherwise known as Chris- played by Ellen Burstyn
Regan (the daughter)- played by Linda Blair
Father Karras- played by Jason Miller

****Plot Summary****
The Mother is famous actress who tries to bring up her daughter in the absence of the father. The girl finds a Oujiboard, noises get made up in the attic, the girl tells people that they're gonna die, they die, mother takes the girl around to doctors to find out whats wrong with her, who inturn refer her to religion so an exorcist can help her.

If you have ever watched the Scary Movie Trilogy then you wwill have seen the comical references made about this film. Regan's head spinning around, her excessive green projectile vomiting and her excessive tongue flicking.

Perhaps you have even heard of the girl Regan masterbating using the crucifix. But I doubt that you have been told about what happens in the film a few moments later...Chris (Regan's Mum) enters into the room and sees her daughter with the crucifix and tries to take it away from her. Regan (possessed) tells her mother to lick her out, grabs her head and forces Chris's head down to her genitals. You hear gurgalling noises.

This for me was the most disturbing part in the whole film- I have nevr felt so sick and disgusted. I dont even know if this happened in the original? If so I can understand why people walked out!

I wont tell you what happens in the end but needless to say an exorcism takes place. But will Regan return to her normal self?

But for those who have seen this I have seen the film, I have a few questions;

What was meant by the beginning scenes with the excavation in Iraq?

What was the meaning behind the ouji board and noises int he attic?

Did the demon die after it went into Father Karras?

****Comments****

I thought that the plot was good, but there were a few points that needed ironing out, but not as badly as a David Lynch film (Mulholland Drive), watch a few and you'll see what i mean. The acting was brilliat and if not disturbing at times.

Musically- I love the tune thats played at the beginning and at the end of the movie- I think its the only music (as such) in the whole film.

I hate it when you listen to all the hype about movies because you always get let down. I did and Im sorry to say that unfortunately the Exorcist didnt scare me but rather it disgusted me. So I was disappointed and Im sorry but I wouldnt recommend this film for the reason that people may find it offensive on a personal and religious level. An example of people taking offence at horrible scenes in a religious context is evident in the recent events in Birmingham when that play was shut down because a rape in a Sikh temple was found to be offensive to alot of the Sikh
community.

Definately a film for those with a strong stomach. I think some light hearted entertainment is called for, sister Act anyone?

I finally saw this a year or so ago after hearing stuff about it for years. I was very disappouinted - it's not worth the hype it got.

Nice one Emma. Here's my attampt at answering your questions. The beginning scenes with the excavation in Iraq are to do with a hunt for WMDs, but all they found was a demon. Sound familiar? The noises in the attic are just scary, no doubt about it. I think the demon lived up there for a bit before it got cold and thought a bed would be better. I don't think that the demon did die after it went into Father Karras, because if you look closely at the death scene at the foot of the steps, his hand moves and at that point I think the crafty demon went into the other priest who touched him. Cunning eh? Chris x
