In my opinion The Exorcist is the best and most disturbing horror film ever made. Released in 1973 at the end of the Vietnam War, this film shocked audiences all over America and sent many of the public running from Cinemas due to the disturbing nature of its content.
Written by William Peter Blatty and Directed by William Friedkin, The Exorcist is hailed as the scariest film ever made, it was nominated for 10 Oscars and won 2 for Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The film follows the demonic-possession of 12-year old Regan McNeil (Linda Blair), daughter of Chris McNeil (Ellen Burstyn) a famous actress. As Regan’s behaviour starts to change dramatically she subjected to a series of horrid medical test including a spinal tap. These scenes alone caused much revulsion and complaints from many.
With the medical possibilities becoming seemingly exhausted Mrs McNeil decides to consult Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller) a Jesuit Priest and psychiatrist. Father Karras studies Regan to determine whether what is actually wrong with her. He soon becomes convinced she has become possessed by the devil and schedules an Exorcism to take place in her home.
The chosen Exorcist Father Merrin, is brought in to perform the ritual with Father Karras as his assistant. The two Priests then fight to drive the devil from the young girl’s body whilst they are subjected to a torrent of abuse, rage, spitting and vomiting.
I will not go any further into the film as it has a very dramatic ending that will leave you shocked and afraid. It really is a must for everyone to see, apart from those who are easily disturbed and easily offended.
The sound in the film is absolutely superb which deservedly won an Oscar, the soundtrack being very eerie and adds to the tension and fear that the viewer is experiencing. Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’ is used during the film, which I always instantly associate with a feeling of discomfort.
The film’s original cut was banned back in 1973, since then they have attempted to get this version re-released, the latest version finally shows the infamous ‘Spider Walk’ scene and adds an extra 11 minutes of unseen footage to the normal release.
Although it is starting to look dated it is a film that was a landmark in film-making history and one of the first true ‘blockbusters’, try to watch a remastered version on DVD, it makes the whole experience more enjoyable from a sound and picture quality point of view.

After a 25 year ban I was really excited to finally be able to watch it, but I didn't find it scary, to me it was just boring. It may have been shocking at the time, but I don't feel it's aged well at all.
