I have just seen this film on the TV, and it was the funniest thing I've seen in a while. I'm 16 and my sister had invited her friends over (they're 13 / 14), we were all in the room in the dark. I had missed the first part (read some1 elses for info on that bit) and I came in after the main character was possessed and she was doing some sick things with a crucifix. This bit was really non-understandable, and I'm not quite sure why it was included. This was the worst bit of the film.
The special effects where as funny as anything. This film was banned for about 25 years for some reason, so I thought it may have been a good one. It obviously wasn't. The special effects were supposedly good when it was released, but even Star Wars has better effects than this. The girl looks like an extra out of the 'Leprechaun' series of movies the make-up was so poorly done most of the time. Most of the 'scary' special effects where poorly done. The head turning on the girl looked a lot like someone turning a barbie-dolls head it was that bad. It was quite funny. The other 'main' special effect was when she 'aimed' her vomit at the priests (tell u a bit more about that later :) I thought this bit was superb. It had to be the funniest thing they could have done. The bed rising did seem a bit corny.
The music wasn't that bad. Most of the time it was atmospheric and relevant to the scene.
The acting is just brilliant on this particular film. The mum made quite a good actress as a worried parent. I'm not sure what the real life version would be, but it is quite convincing. The priests are also very good, but the best has to be the possessed girl. The voice-sync with her and the devil is -very- good.
I found the storyline to be superb. Apparentley this girl plays with a ouji board (got off over ppl's ops:) and then get's possessed by the ultimate evil. The mother thinks she has just developed an illness so she hires doctors to see if they can figure it out. Them being scientists believeing that eveything has a basis in the world say that she should get an excocism done. This they think will give 'support' to people who think they have been infested with evil spirits, as they think the girl belongs in a mental asylum. The mother takes the kid home and contacts her friend, who is a psychologist and a priest. The friend, one of the main priests in the film, is asked to see the girl. He responds by saying 'I can see her as a psychologist, but not as a priest.' his reason for this is he needs the approval of the church before performing an exorcism. He begins something (not quite sure what) like an exorcism on the girl, and he discovers some facts about the takeover of her body. This leaves him wanting an exorcism to be performed. After this the story gets intresting, but I'll leave it there, if you do want the full story, read someone elses opinion in this category.
Overall, this film is good if you want a laugh. But not if you are looking for a horror film. I can't see why this film was banned at all. Whatever you decide have fun.
