A young girl (Regan) has been playing with an Ouja Board, soon after she falls ill and begins to have fits and convulsions. The doctors feel its some sort of mental disorder but can find no physical evidence to back this up. Regans condition gets worse and the doctors suggest that an exorcism might work (on the basis of mental suggest only). Two priests are called in and the exorcism takes place.
I first watched this film many years ago at a late night showing and to be honest it scared the bejesus out of me. The second time was when it got a general release at the cinemas and it had a much less marked effect on me. I watched this again last Halloween and I found it on the whole dull and boring. The first hour or so of the film is very slow, and things only really get interesting once the possession and exorcism of the girl begin in earnest.
THE DVD
The DVD is presented in 1.85:11 widescreen format with a 5.1 sound mix. The first thing that struck me about the DVD was how clear and crisp the picture is, especially if you consider the age of the film.
It’s the extras that really made this a special disk, these include: - A documentary called 'The Fear Of God', various interviews with the actors & film makers, the original ending, commentaries by William Friedkin & William Peter Blatty, storyboards & sketches, and the usual trailers & TV spots.
OVERALL
I don’t think the film has really stood the test of time and while the extras of the DVD are excellent I feel that you buy a DVD for the film and the extras are really the icing on the cake. I will watch a good film many time, but extras rarely get viewed more that once or twice.

Advantages: Great screenplay and caught Friedkin in his top form Disadvantages: remarks about the film that turn away patrons whether good or bad for its publicity
