I saw this film mostly out of curiosity, having seen the trailer, which features the hallucination of a University student turning round with black liquid pouring out of his eyes. I didn’t understand what it was meant to be but that freaked me out enough to make me want to watch the film – so onto my rental list it went. I must admit my expectations were mistaken, but I blame the trailer for the impression it gave. Yes, it is a horror movie, but there is more to it than that and it is not a ‘hide-behind-the-couch/popcorn/boyfriend/girlfriend/pet’ type film.
The Story
This film takes place in two separate periods of time, so there are, in a way, two plots. Firstly, there are court proceedings against a priest, Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson), assessing his level of responsibility for the death of Emily Rose. His lawyer, Erin Bruner (Laura Linney), determined to have Moore cleared of manslaughter by negligence, becomes too involved in the case to the point that she herself appears to be tormented – possibly by the same thing that killed Emily Rose. Moore seems less concerned by what the jury’s verdict might be than by a duty he feels he owes to Rose to ensure that her story – her experience of being possessed by demons – is not left unheard. The court case offers some emotive drama, as well as an opportunity for viewers to act as jury and look at the whole story from a critical perspective. It was an interesting way to deal with the story – which is based on a true story – although I was sceptical when I first watched the film.
The second plot is made up of the events leading to Rose’s death. To begin with, weird things start happening to her and she switches between being her normal self and acting in a way that some might regard as ‘possessed’. Her unusual behaviour becomes increasing disturbing and distressing for her parents. At first it is thought that she is suffering some sort of mental illness or physical disease that affects her behaviour. I am not giving anything away by saying that in the end, Emily Rose dies, because the proceedings have given this away already. But she has an experience before her death, which I will purposefully leave out. Suffice it to say it was decided that medical treatment could help her no further, the exorcism was doomed to fail and she endured an awful death. This part of the story is the more ‘horror movie’ part of the film that will have been most advertised and is likely to be what most people are watching for. It isn’t so much scary as cringe-worthy, although I suppose you can imagine that it is terrifying for poor Emily Rose.
The Acting
This could not have been an easy film to tackle and the roles must have been a challenge to perform and in my opinion they could not be better done. The entire film was filled by an atmosphere of tension and something like fear. Jennifer Carpenter gave an amazing performance, transforming a sweet, perhaps naïve girl, terrified by what is happening to her into the demon-controlled/epileptic (or sufferer of another illness) creature that seems to be in some sort of trance. It is also evident that a battle is being fought within that one body in which no outsider can help.
Laura Linney’s character Erin goes from a lawyer who simply wants to do her job, unconvinced of the account given to her by her client, to a deeply involved, determined investigator who may be risking her soul to uncover what to her may now be the truth about what happened.
Tom Wilkinson’s performance of Moore also draws in much sympathy and concern for his own well-being as you may find yourself wishing you could tell the jury what you know – from what you see of his part at the time of the exorcism.
Film Qualities
The graphics were pretty impressive, portraying the dreadful reduction of Emily Rose from a bright young girl, faithful and close to her family to a torn-up wretched bug-eating mess suffering with horrific hallucinations. Everything looks fairly realistic and even if you are a complete atheist you can’t help but sympathise with her, because just watching what she sees is disturbing enough.
All I can really say about the soundtrack is that it does compliment the nature of the film quite well. Other than that it was no memorable enough for it to have had any effect on my opinion of the film as a whole.
Conclusion
To be honest I’m not a particularly religious person – I’m hardly much of a believer, but I don’t think you need to be to appreciate this film or be somewhat moved by the story. You just need to be able and willing to take it seriously. You have to start with an open mind. Otherwise you’ll be wasting your time.
Although I accept this film as being a horror movie, unlike most films of its kind, it is not set out to scare. It does perhaps affect you at certain points and maybe will leave you feeling slightly disturbed but the main focus of the film seems to be to reflect the conflicts between our beliefs and our logical thinking. Primarily this is a question of whether the priest acted responsibly by going ahead with an exorcism when perhaps what she needed was to be hospitalised, which leads to: was Rose really possessed by the devil or was she simply ill and needing treatment? The deeper meaning to this question is that we cannot really be sure about what is right and wrong… and even scientific evidence can be questioned.
The conclusion may disappoint some viewers, but it will hopefully at least leave you with something to think about.
I think I could watch this film a couple of times and still appreciate it, but after that it would be pointless seeing it again. To be honest as I wouldn’t even go out of my way to see it a second time, I could only really recommend renting or watching on telly, depending on how keen you are to see it! To be honest I’ve not seen or heard about it coming onto telly at all yet so it might be a wait for that.
Advantages: Based on a true story Disadvantages: Not as scary as it has been made out
After all of the media hype that this film was exceptionally scary (and being an avid horror fan) I snapped this film up when I saw it on sale. I paid in the region of £14.99 for the unseen version, and was ever so excited to watch this, as I do like my horror films to frighten me. If you shop around, you can find this DVD on sale priced from £2.99 to £9.99 so my advice is to shop around for a bargain.

Advantages: Deep, thought provoking Disadvantages: A little cliched
The Exorcism of Emily Rose is based on the true story of a girl who was killed during an exorcism ritual in the 1970s.
The film begins at the end. Emily (Jennifer Carpenter) has died during an exorcism performed by Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson). The story is told through flashbacks as Moore stands trial for negligent homicide, defended by Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) who herself comes under supernatural attack from the forces of darkness.
Essentially ... ...thought the filmmakers did a superb job; this is a really good film. What struck me at first is the depth of the characters. Erin Bruner is a hot-shot defence lawyer, when we first encounter her, she comes across as ruthless and ambitious. In her last case she helped a guilty murderer walk free, with seemingly no conscience. She is an agnostic. Very soon in the case she is forced to accept possibilities that are not based on fact. She has to have ...

Advantages: somewhat gripping, story is ok Disadvantages: no proper special effects, not the scariest movie
Well, in the 70s I suppose this was a scary movie, but after the Exorcist, Silent Hill and The Hills Have Eyes, it's just another movie that fails to grip.
All starts with a priest being accused of negligence in a courtroom. Apparently he performed an exorcism ritual on 20-year-old Emily Rose who died from the consequences. According to doctors, she was not possessed, just epileptic. That's where a female lawyer Erin is called in to defend him and ... ...to Emily Rose and as the story in court unfolds, the initially doubtful Erin's soul seems to be at stake. Based on a true story, I must say this film is not very convincing. Throughout the film, I couldn't help but think that there could be other explanations than being possessed, from epilepsy to schizophreny. The cast is not great at all and some scenes are a bit exaggerated that we could not help ourselves but start cracking jokes. All in all, ...

Based on a true story, this film is both a riveting courtroom drama and a first class chiller. A Catholic Priest (Tom Wilkinson) is on trial for homicidal negligence after performing a failed exorcism on Emily Rose, devout college girl (Jennifer Carpenter) now dead from assorted wounds and malnutrition. Laura Linney plays Erin Bruner, the priest's defense lawyer, and Campbell Scott plays the chief prosecutor, who argues persuasively that Emily was likely suffering from psychotic epilepsy and could have been saved with hospitalisation and medicine. The demonic possession unfolds in a series of spine-tingling flashbacks and as it does so, the initially doubtful Erin is visited by evil forces and her own soul seems to be at stake. More than a criminal negligence case, the trial becomes about the importance of recognising the limits of rationality and the possibility of a world beyond the visible. In portraying the extent to which wildly different belief systems have splintered modern society this film couldn't be more relevant or timely. Linney and Campbell are first rate, as is to be expected, creating great depth for their characters even though the script grants them almost no personal lives; it's a very 'stick to the facts' sort of tale. Each character lives a life of apparent near-isolation, which adds to the cumulative effect of unease. The house where Emily grows up is spookily oppressive, the scenes of possession are truly scary and a dark sense of foreboding may follow viewers long after the credits have rolled. Carpenter earns a place as a 21st century scream queen with her hair-raising, fearless performance; Mary Beth Hurt plays the judge.
