I have many horror movies in my gigantic video collection but none come close (apart from nightmare on elm street) to evil dead the original horror movie. The budget for this film was set at $300,000 and by todays standards thats like compering a penny to a pound. I first watched the second edition of this movie 'Evil Dead 2 - Dead By Dawn' at my friends house with five other mates. We couldn't stop laughing because it was full of hilarious one liners and looked poorly made.
knowing this movie cost $3,000,000 to make, 10 times more than the first one I expected it to be really poorly made and crap basically, how wrong I was (like usual) evil dead was much better than dead by dawn it was more twisted full of suprises which were not expected. this film is a must see.
The story is a simple one. Five college students venture into the wooded mountains of Tennessee to spend a weekend of fun in an isolated cabin. Whilst here they tread upon the book of the dead or the necrominicum as it is known. They also find a tape recording of a professor who has been to the cabin and witnessed the terrible goings on there.
This was now famous horror movie director Sam Raimi's first film which was followed by the rest of the evil dead series. Considering the budget he was given he does an excellent job with the special effects. After hearing the recording one of the students ventures of into the woods after hearing strange noises. Lets say all doesn't go to well and she finds herself possesed by evil.
The Book of the Dead, bound in human flesh and inked in human blood, contains the ancient rituals that causes the spirits of evil to awaken and take control, one by one, of the poor innocent students . As the survivors see their friends and love ones turned into hideous, murdering demons, they learn that the only way to kill the possessed is to dismember their bodies. Everytime I here the professor say them words it sends chills down my spine.
I wouldn't recommend this film to the squemish or the faint hearted because its full of guts and gore. There is one bit of the film where a possessed student stabs one of her soon to be possessed friends in the achilles tendon with a pencil and twists it round. this bit is rather disturbing and makes me shake.
The director Sam Raimi was even in a battle with wes kraven director of all N.O.E.S and the scream series. The story was that Raimi stuck a ripped picture of 'The hills have eyes' one of Kravens first movies in the basement of the hut. There main reason for this being that they wanted to show kraven that this was real horror and his movie was 'Pop Horror' as they put it. Kraven responded to this by playing evil dead on a TV screen in Nightmare On Elm Street. I also noticed that in evil dead 2 they put Freddy Kruegers glove in the basement of the hut. Petty directors, I don't know.
Bruce Campbell stars in this film as the role of Ash the only man that manages to not get possessed on his trip to the cabin. He does an excellent job considering it was his first film role and he was only 21. He carried on as the hero Ash in Dead By Dawn and also Army Of darkness the third installment of evil dead. Still banned in countries to this day, evil dead has to be my favourite horror of all time.
DVD Extras ---------- I have recently bought the DVD of evil dead and thought I might aswell tell you about the extras if you are considering buying this film (Do It!). On the extras section there is the original trailer that was shown at american cinemas. The only problem of this trailer is it shows most of the good bits of the film which was rather stupid. The other features are audio commentry all the way through the film by star bruce campbell and director sam raimi. This is where I got most of my information for my op on. The DVD is for sale at around £15-£17 and is well worth the money.
Thanks for the read. Andy :)
