Snow Dogs & Eight Below (DVD)

Advantages: Brilliant family films, Disney quality picture & sound
Disadvantages: Some parts a bit unrealistic in eight below

Eight Below & Snow Dogs I bought Snow Dogs on video years ago when it first came out and really enjoyed it so when I saw the 2 piece set of this and the new similar film on DVD I went and bought it from play.com as I already wanted to replace my old copy of Snow Dogs with a DVD so this was the best reason to do so. Snow Dogs A Walt Disney Film The first film came out in May 2002, directed by Brian Levant. The cast includes *Cuba Gooding Jr, who plays Ted Brooks a Miami Dentist. *James Coburn, who plays Jack Johnson (Thunder Jack), an old grumpy man that keeps a team of sledge dogs who then turns out to be Ted's real father. *Sisqo, who plays Dr Rupert Brooks who plays Ted's assistant at his Miami Dentist Practice. *Nichelle Nichols, who plays Amelia Brooks, Ted's mother. The of course there is the dog actors ...

Eight Below - A Diverting Couple of Hours

Advantages: Great dogs, great scenery, entertaining
Disadvantages: Acting and dialogue aren't that strong

Eight Below is a Disney action film, released in 2006, which tells the story of a group of huskies who are left to fend for themselves through the harsh Antarctic winter and their handler who is fighting to be able to return to collect them. It is 'inspired' by a true story and is a remake of a Japanese film. I first went to see this at the cinema with my eldest and we got the DVD at Christmas. It got mixed reviews at the time, but it's very popular in our house. The first almost half of the film introduces us to the huskies and their handler, Jerry, as they take a visiting scientist on a hazardous journey to find evidence of a rare meteorite. The trip introduces us to the beauty and the dangers of this part of the world and to the bravery and obedience of the dogs who evidently love their work and unquestioningly get the visiting ...

Fire Down Below Film Review

Advantages: Seagal is surprisingly good.
Disadvantages: An "Eco-Thriller"?!

Surely with all this "Save the Planet" fixation in the media these days, it wouldn't be so criminal (as it seemed it once was) to watch Steven Seagal's 1997 "Eco-Thriller". Despite its reputation, Fire Down Below really isn't that bad a film. Seagal is Jack Taggart, an agent of the Environmental Protection Agency. Kris Kristofferson soon becomes the target as the crooked businessman, who has been using abandoned mines to dump toxic waste. Getting to him requires Seagal to arse-whip a host of dirty yokels, and then deliver an ecological message in the church to let everyone know that pissing with the environment is an absolute no-no. OK, so it may not sound like the most exciting synopsis ever, but at least Seagal shows a genuine affection for the issues that many of us choose to ignore. Surprisingly, he comes across as a nice guy ...
