...I wasn't striving to be the perfect Christian then I would be striving to be the perfect Gangster..........well, in my fantasy world anyway. I knew this was going to be right up my street and I have to say that I enjoyed the whole hour and twenty minutes of viewing.

When Andrew told me he had a documentary for us to watch which was all about real life gangsters, my heart jumped. You see, if I wasn't striving to be the perfect Christian then I would be striving to be the perfect Gangster..........well, in my fantasy world anyway. I knew this was going to be right up my street and I have to say that I enjoyed the whole hour and twenty minutes of viewing.

The documentary is very well done in my opinion and it grabbed my attention from beginning to end (apart from a five minute toilet break in the middle!). The whole thing is in black and white and at various points, looks as though it has been filmed in the 1970's. It also has subtitles as most of the guys are from the East end with a really strong accent. The soundtrack gives the whole thing real character and a somewhat 'dark' feel to it at times.
There were some real significant points that really stood out to me including where Andy Mortlock and Jimmy Tibbs reveal how they became 'born again' Christians. As I have already mentioned, I am a Christian and to see these obviously, very hard men who have experienced such a different life to me and been in such dark places and company, speak of how God came into their lives and made them cry like a newborn baby, really encouraged me in my faith. It made me realize how big God is; if he can break them and get through the darkness into their hearts and forgive them then he can do it for anyone.
Some of the stories that the guys tell are really harrowing and I was shocked at how blasé they were when telling them which obviously shows how many times they have experienced this sort of thing. I had to keep reminding myself that these were real life stories and I wasn't just watching a series of The Sopranos.
I really enjoyed the whole thing but I couldn't help but feel that they held back too much. I wanted to know all of the 'in's and out's' of the life they lead and a bit more about the gruesome stuff they had been involved in but I understand they would all be in prison again if they went on camera sharing that sort of thing. If you want just a tiny, real-life glimpse into the life of some of the original East End hard men then you should watch this!!!
Finally, I was a little scared to write this review just incase one of the guys in the documentary see's it, doesn't like what I've written and comes to search for me. Honestly these guys are the real deal!!! So here's a note to all of you 'hard' guys,
I am a young mum who is happily married with two young son's. I did not in any way mean to offend you at all in this review. The documentary was fantastic and I did enjoyed every minute of it. I envy your fearlessness and thanks for sharing a small part of your life. Please don't search me out (I am not taking the mick at all, this is for real!).
...this documentary's release. Made by the twin daughters of one of the gangsters involved, it is made up of a series of interviews with some of the most respected and feared career criminals in the UK.
I always think with these sort of things that those involved are bigging themselves up, but is it justified. However, having read lots of books about the people in this film, I know none of it is made up. These really are some of the hardest tough guys ... ...in all spheres. Some of the names are new to me, but they certainly look the part!
So what is it about? These London gangsters tell tales of arrests, crimes, fights, jail time, murders, kidnappings and the like, all the while with a smile on their faces. They talk about their values, motivation and beliefs with great clarity.
Of course, they're not stupid enough to admit the crimes they've done, but the good thing is that many of them have served ...

Advantages: If watched with a knowledge of psychology, the between the lines reveals these mens true nature Disadvantages: Much of it is story time at the old age home for sociopaths.
I am not surprised that the two previous reviews were raves for this little film, but it doesn't increase my faith in humanity that that should be the case. This is a film about a bunch of old, flabby, a-moral men all from the same section of East London, the poor side of town, and how they used robbery, murder, and extortion to fund their lives, allowing the director to go to film school, among other things. Right away you knew this was going to ... ...of life" when one of the interviewees said that 90% of people in the East End have done something illegal (by this I took it to mean, robbery, violence, etc., not stealing candy from the local store when they were 9.) So, everyone does it, I guess, and that makes it ok that these men have used violence and intimidation to make their way for their entire lives, because, hey, they have a code, one even considered himself a Robin Hood of his community, ...

DVD Description
THE END is a fascinating documentary from first-time filmmaker Nicola Collins, exploring a subject close to her heart, the gangsters of London's East End. Collins herself is daughter to one contributor, Les Falco, providing her with the inside scoop and inherited trust of Falco's criminal circle. Shooting these larger than life characters up close in stylish black-and-white, Collins dispenses with loaded questions and narration, and lets the men's candid stories speak for themselves. The result is a shocking, brutal, yet somehow endearing and darkly comical profile of an underworld few get to experience... and even fewer live at liberty to tell the tale.
