Eagle was to be the most daring enemy mission of the entire war. Himmler planned to kidnap Churchill on British soil in November 1943. But in that remote corner of Norfolk an elite unit is also put together to begin the countdown to the invasion. This is a brilliant adventure in which the reader' sympathies are enlisted as much for the German heroes as for the English defenders.

stranger to the genre, having already worked on Kelly's Heroes and The Rise and Fall Of The Third Reich. Something about the psychological intuitiveness of this score has meant a more lasting popularity however. There's a very strong motif principally for brass. This creates a very unnerving effect, as does a secondary theme appearing in the form of a human whistle and minimal wind instrument backing. In "Eagle Goes To Church", the combination has more than a little of the feel of Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western style. Beyond the intelligence of the music, the main recommendation is that it presents something extremely different from the regular Jazz noir Schifrin voice. --Paul Tonks

Given the go ahead Adolf Hitler himself Radl searches for the best men to do the job, he finds, Colonel Kurt Steiner (Michael Caine) who is in charge of a group of an elite Para troop regiment.
With the help of an Irish IRA member Liam Devlin (Donald Sutherland) they set about their plans.
Parachuting into England under the cover of darkness, and wearing Polish Paratrooper outfits, they soon make their way to the town, whilst Devlin who went ahead of the invasion, has already established himself into the community as the local Gamekeeper and met up with a British traitor Mrs Joanne Grey (Jean Marsh), who is already a respected member of the town, and he also attracts the attention of a young local girl Molly Prior (Jenny Agutter), who Devlin thinks maybe useful in his plans.
All goes to plan, until a little girl falls into a river, and a German soldier dives in to save her, but after a freak accident, he is killed and his German uniform is exposed for all to see.
Niceties now over, Steiner and his men have a job to do, but can they keep control of the towns folk, enough to enable them to succeed?
Up until this point, the film ticks over very nicely, with some great action, but as usual the Yanks just have to spoil it, Molly manages to tell a young American Officer, who has been stationed nearby with his platoon, about what is happening, and in steps Colonel Pitts (Larry Hagman) and his Gung Ho, platoon of idiots, the cigar chewing fool, wants to prove a point to his superiors, that he's got what it takes, to be a leader of men, but non of them have ever seen action, and he ends up like a Farmer sending his sheep to the slaughter.
I personally thought this would have been much better portrayed by British Troops, that would have been more befitting, to the soldiering skills of the Germans.
I've a feeling that Churchill, never really had a great deal to worry about.
But still an excellent action movie, with some truly great actors, and at last nobody trying stupid attempts at fake accents, even Sutherland as Devlin makes a terrific job of the Irishman.
Advantages: A great film, with great performances. Disadvantages: The action is directed near the end of the film.
The Eagle Has Landed (1977)
It is 1943, and Mussillini has just been rescued from a mountain top prison in Italy by a daring German commando raid. Now Hitler wants Winston Churchill kidnapped. From the pen of Jack Higgins, the film puts you straight into the depths of Nazi Germany and the story of how Colonel Kurt Steiner (MIchael Caine), Liam Delvin (Donald Sutherland) and 15 German paratroopers desend into the quiet English countryside to carry ... ...a battle scarred survivor of the Russian Front that is now the brains behind the mission. A young Jenny Agutter, who provides the love interest for Donald Sutherland as a young nieve country girl.
There is a classic casting of Larry Hagman as Colonel Pitts and his fellow American officer, Captain Clarke, played by Treat Williams.
All in all, this is a great film, providing the viewer with thrills, action, interigue and even a small love interest.

Advantages: Interesting premise, good cast and director Disadvantages: The DVD it comes on
and well balanced one, allowing for sympathies and allegiance to fall on both sides of the warring factions. Both the allies and nazi soldiers are presented as human, and characters with great dignity and intelligence, as well as the village folk of Studley Constable who get to have some colour too. To Jack Higgins, Tom Manckiewicz and John Sturges credit, the plan always seems perfectly feasible and not at all outlandish, and ensures that 'The EagleHasLanded' remains a firm favourite for late night Christmas viewing.
But surely you don't need to watch it at Christmas if you can own it on DVD I hear you cry. Well, this is where I urge you in the strongest possible way not to purchase this abominably bad disc. £5.99 it may be, but even I have to admit it was £5.99 badly spent. Carlton entertainment are an insult to the DVD distribution ...
Advantages: Brilliant Cast Disadvantages: Not as 'polished' as it could be
Based on Jack Higgins bestselling World War 2 novel this film (released in 1976) follows the story of a secret mission by a small group of German Paratroopers whose mission was to drop into England and kidnapp Winston Churchill.
The story is set in lae November 1943 as the Nazi's realise the tide of the war has turned. Hitler is growing more and more frustrated and wants results immediately. Out of a desperate suggestion the idea is born to go in and kidnapp Churchill while he is in the English countryside for a weekend, thus showing the German might and putting them in a better position for negotiation. The idea is labelled as fantasy by the high ranking Germans, all except Colonel Maximillian Radl (Robert Duvall) who puts togther a workable plan which Himmler (Donald Pleasance) approves of.
To safely complete this mission he ...
