I had actually read the book of The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger before seeing this film for the first time and therefore think I may have a slightly different opinion to someone who has not read the book.
The plot of the film is that a young girl called Andrea who has just graduated from college is out to find her first job. She really wants to become a journalist but knows she must find any way into the industry she can. She ends up going for a job at a top fashion magazine Runway. This job isn't for a serious journalist role though; it is to be the new assistant to Miranda Priesly. Miranda is a notorious woman in the fashion industry who will not take no for an answer. When Andy attends the interview Miranda looks her up and down and is certainly disapproving of her attire. Andy ends up bursting out in anger during the interview, which seems to be the ticket to her employment.
When she starts at Runway Andy is sceptical and mocks the other
size 0 Miranda worshipers to her boyfriend Nate. She soon though herself becomes a slave to Miranda and to fashion and starts to forget about Nate and her friends. Will Andy remember who she is and what really matters to her? You will have to watch to find out.
This is as you can probably tell from the storyline definitely a chick flick. I think it is quite a good one at that. I find it a bit more serious than the average chick flick, which is quite good I feel. The book was a bit deeper though and had a more in depth storyline. There are a few differences between the book and the film. One of them is that she lives with her boyfriend Nate in the film and in the book she lives with some random people and then moves in with her best friend Lily. This was quite an important part of the storyline so I feel should have been added in to the film. There were also a few other details to do with the ending that are different and were a lot more serious and had more impact in the book. Despite these differences I still feel that the storyline was good and more interesting than the average chick flick story. The parts out of the book were probably left out to make it less serious. It would also make it a very long film.
I think that the acting in the film by the two main characters Miranda and Andy was very good. Meryl Streep played the character of Miranda superbly and I think she was exactly how I would have imagined her to be. You could tell what she was thinking just by her facial expressions and it wasn't pretty! She was able to play this hard faced uncaring woman well and in a believable way. It is miles apart from her role in Mamma Mia but she is able to play both characters brilliantly. I think the scenes where she had to show some emotion were done well and you could believe that this is how someone who seems so uncaring would show emotion. Overall it was a great performance that really added to the film.
Anne Hathaway played Andy. Again I think this was a good performance although not on the same level as Meryl Streep. Andy was again played how I would imagine her to be from the book. She showed a good transformation from someone who didn't care about fashion or her job to someone who could think of nothing else.
The other characters play fairly small roles compared to the two main roles but they are all played well.
The tone of the film is fairly serious although there are a few humorous moments that are quite funny. This makes the film slightly more enjoyable. It also pokes fun at the fashion world and is a good stereotype of what working in fashion is really like.
Overall I would say this is an enjoyable film for any chick flick lover out there. Do not expect a lighthearted comedy though this one is a little bit darker but definitely still enjoyable. It is just a shame it didn't follow the book a little more.
The DVD comes with extra features including featurettes, deleted scenes and the trailer for the film.
I purchased this DVD for £3 at Asda so it is definitely a bargain buy.
