The devil wears Prada is a 2006 comedy drama film directed by David Frankel and starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. It revolves around the vicious and back stabbing world of fashion, and the people in it. Andy Sachs (Hathaway) has just graduated from Northwest university and moves to New York, hoping to be a journalist at the New Yorker. However, the reality’s a little different. While looking for jobs, she finds out that if she becomes the junior assistant to the infamous Miranda Priestly, she’ll have her pick of great jobs after just a year. Although it seems like an amazing deal, it soon turns out to be anything but. The job that a million girls would dream for turns out to be more like Andy’s idea of hell, working for the demanding Miranda Priestly exhausts her and her life outside of work begins to disappear. Also, she doesn’t fit in at all with the other high end fashion employees. Will she change and fit in? Will Andy be able to stick out the year with Miranda Priestly?
This is another film with near perfect casting. The main people in the film were Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci and Simon Baker. Meryl Streep steals every scene she’s in, when she stars as the demanding and adored editor in chief of Runway, who people cant quite decide if they hate or love her. She plays this role brilliantly, and got critical acclaim for her outstanding acting, as well as a golden globe. Anne Hathaway plays the aspiring journalist that the film is centred around, and is very believable, playing up the naivety of someone with no experience of the fashion industry just the right amount. Emily Blunt plays the catty main assistant, it was her first major role and she won critical success, which platformed her onto her next roles. Stanley Tucci has a memorable supporting role as the overly gay art director for Runway and the only person in Runway who’s nice to Andy. He plays it really well as his character has a lot of depth. Also, Simon Baker stars as the charming Christian Thompson who seduces Andy.
The film was adapted from the bestseller book of the same name by Lauren Weisberger. It stayed mostly true to the book, but there were some changes like name changes and a few scenes were cut, and some scenes were written just for the film.
Its another good easy watching film, the plot develops easily and the characters aren’t too complex.
Its rated as a 12, although when I went to see it at the cinema it was a PG, so the rating has gone up and this is for a good reason. There are numerous mentions of sex as well as a scene where Andy and Nate have sex and then wait up together in the morning. There’s no drug use, just lots of alcohol fuelled parties.
As it’s a film based on fashion with the fashion industry, there was a huge budget for the costumes and there was a massive amount of designers involved. Each character had a very distinctive look, and the fashion supervisor on this film did an excellent job. While Andy had a simpler fashionable look, Emily goes for a more punky and edgy feel to her clothes.
It had massive success, and was Anne Hathaway’s highest grossing film as well as winning a few awards.
I bought mine for £5 in Tesco a few years ago, but since then the price has gone down and you can get it really cheaply in most places, for example its available for £3 in Asda and on play.com
Overall, a great movie about fashion and one to watch again.
