SYNOPSIS

'Infernal Affairs' in a dark, fast pace thriller movie that was highly acclaimed in Hong Kong. The story follows two leading characters, Chan (Tony Leung) and Lau (Andy Lau). They were under the programme of what was called 'Long-Term Undercovering'. Perhaps both men did not realize what they were in for when they took it up. Soon, not being able to live their lives and being in this operation for ten years; it has taken the toll of both characters, especially Chan.
Chan was a high-flying, high achieving young police officer when he started the force. His ability was soon beginning recognized by all. However, one day, Chan was booted out of the force in front of his fellow officers, claiming Chan broke some rules and it is the consequences that all officers will suffer, if they wish to follow ...
Advantages: Well written, tense, black humour, make up and effects, Davina McCall(!) Disadvantages: Violent and very gory, a little padded in places
Before reading:
1. Contains several plot spoilers. But you can probably guess what happens at the end anyway.
2. Assumes a basic knowledge of the Big Brother TV show and format.
3. Parts of Dead Set are pretty gruesome, so if you?re of a nervous disposition you may not even want to read the rest of this review, never mind follow any of the links at the end.

Advantages: Fantastic pacing, more depth than most film of its type, Tony Leung. Disadvantages: Attempts at humor fail, some characters lacking.
Reviewing foriegn films is always difficult for me, as I hard it hard to separate whether any enjoyment is gained from the film just looking and sounding different to your typical American or British film, or whether it is genuinely good on it's own merits. Obviously a few easily standout as works of exceptional construction, but others hover between the two theories above, and so they become awkward to place. Infernal Affairs is one such film.
Coming across as a kind of Chinese 'Heat', it tells the story of two men leading parallel lives; Lau (Andy Lau) and Chan (Tony Leung). For the past ten years, they have been undercover operatives.
