Some time during the 1970s (possibly the early 1980s), I read Stephen King's book "The DeadZone", and although I rather like most of his books, this one didn't hit any spots in me other than make me laugh a little at the way some of the conversation was written (I believe Stephen King did intend those parts to be amusing). Overall, I ...
and he has become 'blessed' with a strange power. You see, Johnny has the ability to see into a person's future just by touching their hand, an ability which he uses to help solve a murder and then to rescue a drowning child, an event which he again foresaw. Eventually, at a political rally he meets local candidate Greg Stillson(Martin Sheen) and foresees that he will become President...but will also start a nuclear war. Understandably rocked by this revelation Johnny watches as Stillson steadily amasses power and political influence and realises that the only way he can prevent his vision coming true is to assassinate him...
Fans of David Kronenberg's previous work will be less than enthralled by the goings on here - well not as a piece of Kronenberg's work anyway, because it is hugely different. The DeadZone was his first outing into ...
Advantages: Well written, good characters Disadvantages: Not scary
As King goes this isn't actually one of this best.
The main plot point is that a young man is out with his sweetheart, has just dropped her off home after an unusual round of luck at the fairground and then gets in a car accident. After the car accident he goes into a coma for a few years, and we he wakes he can feel evil in people and things those evil people have touched.
It's lacking largely because it simply wasn't scary. It had King's realism, the depth of his characters, their quirkiness and was definitely his writing, but it wasn't scary. The most scary point in the whole book was when the main character had his run of luck at the fair, that was it.
'The DeadZone' refers to things the man can't remember after the accident, simple things, like being unable to visualise a park bench.
Not a bad book, easy to read and engaging ...

DVD Description
Based on characters from Stephen King's novel, THE DEAD ZONE, this sci-fi series explores what happens when a model citizen nearly loses his life and then wakes up six years later with psychic powers allowing him to see into the life of anyone he happens to touch. When viewers first met Johnny Smith (Anthony Michael Hall, in a role played by Christopher Walken in David Cronenberg's 1983 adaptation), he was leading a wholesome life in a picture-perfect small town. A science teacher, Johnny was a devoted son to his widowed mother, a role model to his pupils, and a devoted fiance to his soon-to-be wife and fellow teacher Sarah until a near-fatal accident landed him in a coma for six years. Upon waking, Johnny had to deal with the fact that the life he remembered had ceased to exist, and that his new powers were just as burdensome as they were valuable. In the third series--included here in its entirety--Johnny continues to make up for lost time while attempting to use his powers for the good.
