The Dead Zone : A dark portrayal of one man's misery

Advantages: Gripping, intense, powerful, realistic, keeps you on the edge of your seat, spectacular ending
Disadvantages: None for me, though some people may find it too depressing

Main Cast:- Christopher Walken (as Johnny Smith) Brooke Adams (as Sarah Bracknell, Johnny's girlfriend) Herbert Lom (as Dr Weizak, Johnny's doctor) Tom Skerritt (as the Castle Rock Sheriff) Martin Sheen (as Greg Stillson, political candidate) Director: David Cronenberg Producer: Debra Hill Music: Michael Kamen Screenplay: Jeffrey Boam (Adapted from Stephen King's novel, The Dead Zone) Running time: 103 minutes Released: 1983 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Some time during the 1970s (possibly the early 1980s), I read Stephen King's book "The Dead Zone", and although I rather like most of his books, this one didn't hit any spots in me other than make me laugh a little at the way some of the conversation was written (I believe Stephen King did intend those parts to be amusing). Overall, I ...

The Dead Zone

and he has become 'blessed' with a strange power. You see, Johnny has the ability to see into a person's future just by touching their hand, an ability which he uses to help solve a murder and then to rescue a drowning child, an event which he again foresaw. Eventually, at a political rally he meets local candidate Greg Stillson(Martin Sheen) and foresees that he will become President...but will also start a nuclear war. Understandably rocked by this revelation Johnny watches as Stillson steadily amasses power and political influence and realises that the only way he can prevent his vision coming true is to assassinate him... Fans of David Kronenberg's previous work will be less than enthralled by the goings on here - well not as a piece of Kronenberg's work anyway, because it is hugely different. The Dead Zone was his first outing into ...

Review of The Dead Zone (DVD)

The Dead Zone - Unscary

Advantages: Well written, good characters
Disadvantages: Not scary

As King goes this isn't actually one of this best. The main plot point is that a young man is out with his sweetheart, has just dropped her off home after an unusual round of luck at the fairground and then gets in a car accident. After the car accident he goes into a coma for a few years, and we he wakes he can feel evil in people and things those evil people have touched. It's lacking largely because it simply wasn't scary. It had King's realism, the depth of his characters, their quirkiness and was definitely his writing, but it wasn't scary. The most scary point in the whole book was when the main character had his run of luck at the fair, that was it. 'The Dead Zone' refers to things the man can't remember after the accident, simple things, like being unable to visualise a park bench. Not a bad book, easy to read and engaging ...
