The Day Of The Triffids (BBC)

The original BBC adaptation of John Wyndham's classic story of post-apocalyptic ... more

survivalThe BBC's adaptation of John Wyndham's
classic novel has been hailed as an atmospheric,
gripping and faithful production. The brainchild
of Blake's 7 producer David Maloney, this
post-apocalyptic series was broadcast in 1981,
when fears of a nuclear Armageddon were at their
height. The series generated cult appeal that had
the longevity to be considered an influence on
2002's 28 Days Later.Following the Earth's close
encounter with a comet, a meteor shower strikes
Britain's population blind. Bill Masen, recovering
in a London hospital from a vicious plant attack,
is one of a few to survive with eyesight intact.
The world he emerges into has already terrifyingly
altered. The government has collapsed, bands of
renegades are thriving in the anarchy - and a
hostile, carnivorous form of plant life, the
Triffids, have begun to prey on the weakened and
vulnerable human populations. For Masen, life is
now a desperate struggle...

The Day of the Triffids

When Bill Masen wakes up blindfolded in hospital there is a bitter irony in his situation. ... more

Carefully removing his bandages  he realizes that
he is the only person who can see: everyone else
doctors and patients alike  have been blinded by a
meteor shower. Now  with civilization in chaos
the triffids - huge  venomous  large-rooted plants
able to 'walk'  feeding on human flesh - can have
their day. "The Day of the Triffids"  published in
1951  expresses many of the political concerns of
its time: the Cold War  the fear of biological
experimentation and the man-made apocalypse.
However  with its terrifyingly believable insights
into the genetic modification of plants  the book
is more relevant today than ever before.

The Day of the Triffids.

Advantages: great read
Disadvantages: nothing

The Day of the Triffids. A great book and far better than the watered down 1960's film version. The central character is Bill Masen who is a Genetic engineer working on a 'Triffid' farm. The Triffids are walking plants about 8ft high which have a sting or lash which can flash out at you and is invariably fatal. They are farmed for their oils which are greatly sort after throughout the world. Bill had a Triffid lash out at him and some of the poisons vapour got through his protective head guard and temporarily blinded him, thus putting him in hospital for a few days and more importantly nights. During his stay in hospital the world is treated to a passing meteor storm flashing through the Earth atmosphere and giving off an eerie green glow to the skies all over the world. This has the effect of rendering all ...

Review of The Day of the Triffids - John Wyndham

The Day of the Triffids

Advantages: A satisfying read
Disadvantages: none

"When a day that you happen to know is Wednesday starts off by sounding like Sunday, there is something seriously wrong somewhere." A comet on a close approach to Earth creates a light show. Across the world, everybody who is able, watches the magnificent shooting stars across the night sky. The next morning all who watched the nocturnal display have been blinded. Society across the world is plunged into chaos and darkness, and humanity faces a short future. The cause of the chaos are the triffids, a giant carniverous plant, The Triffid, a plant originally from Russia, bred for it's oil. These mobile and intelligent plants were dangerous, but now they have become lethal. Blind people cannot easily avoid the deadly stings of the species, when they can't even see them. Blindness, disease, loneliness and hunger bring out humanity ...

TRIFFIDS, ORCHID OR A FLOP?

Advantages: Good Value
Disadvantages: Poor Quality in Places, Low Special Effects

The Day Of The Triffids made in 1962 by Directors Steve Sekely (Night Of The Living Dead) and Freddie Francis (The Creeping Flesh & Torture Garden), from the book of the same name by author John Wyndham. The story..... All over the world a large meteorite shower can be seen hitting the Earth's atmosphere, a large spectacular shower that the Worlds press is reporting as being 'unprecedented shower of meteorites - a once in a lifetime spectacle that must be seen'. The Worlds population does just that and goes outside to see this event. In the morning the World awakes to find that all those who saw the meteorite shower, are now blind. The population becomes a crazed, hysterical mass of violent and helpless people. Meanwhile, a hospital patient, Bill Masen who had under gone surgery on his eyes and didn't see the shower ...
