survivalThe BBC's adaptation of John Wyndham's classic novel has been hailed as an atmospheric, gripping and faithful production. The brainchild of Blake's 7 producer David Maloney, this post-apocalyptic series was broadcast in 1981, when fears of a nuclear Armageddon were at their height. The series generated cult appeal that had the longevity to be considered an influence on 2002's 28 Days Later.Following the Earth's close encounter with a comet, a meteor shower strikes Britain's population blind. Bill Masen, recovering in a London hospital from a vicious plant attack, is one of a few to survive with eyesight intact. The world he emerges into has already terrifyingly altered. The government has collapsed, bands of renegades are thriving in the anarchy - and a hostile, carnivorous form of plant life, the Triffids, have begun to prey on the weakened and vulnerable human populations. For Masen, life is now a desperate struggle...
When Bill Masen wakes up blindfolded in hospital there is a bitter irony in his situation. ... more
Carefully removing his bandages he realizes that he is the only person who can see: everyone else doctors and patients alike have been blinded by a meteor shower. Now with civilization in chaos the triffids - huge venomous large-rooted plants able to 'walk' feeding on human flesh - can have their day. "The Day of the Triffids" published in 1951 expresses many of the political concerns of its time: the Cold War the fear of biological experimentation and the man-made apocalypse. However with its terrifyingly believable insights into the genetic modification of plants the book is more relevant today than ever before.

The story.....
All over the world a large meteorite shower can be seen hitting the Earth's atmosphere, a large spectacular shower that the Worlds press is reporting as being 'unprecedented shower of meteorites - a once in a lifetime spectacle that must be seen'. The Worlds population does just that and goes outside to see this event.
In the morning the World awakes to find that all those who saw the meteorite shower, are now blind. The population becomes a crazed, hysterical mass of violent and helpless people.
Meanwhile, a hospital patient, Bill Masen who had under gone surgery on his eyes and didn't see the shower and therefore is one of the few people who can see. He leaves the Hospital and finds a little girl in the train station, wandering helplessly on the platform, being grabbed by people who realise she can see, form an alliance and remain together through the film. Just when you thought the World was suffering enough, comes the Triffids, a species of vicious man-eating plants, brought to Earth as spores within the meteorite shower, are now roaming the World killing all those who are helpless through blindness. The Triffids remind me of a large Orchid, but more unrealistic.....
Meanwhile, in a lighthouse out at sea a scientist and his wife are working in solitude, but not without their own problems. He is an alcoholic and they argue a great deal, but they are to be mankind's saviours, but just don't know it yet. They discover by accident a substance that is effective in killing this invaders, World is saved!!!!!
I won't go in to all of the story or how the Triffids are beaten, but the story just jump around quite a bit, between the main story and the sub-story at the lighthouse.
Although made in 1962, and released the following year, the film has a poor quality about it. The Special effects are nothing special and certainly not of the quality available around that period. The characters (only a handful) are not strong and the majority of the film uses mass numbers of people to represent the panicking population of Earth..... The picture quality is also poor in places and is duly noted on the rear of the cover, stating - 'Due to the archive nature of this film the sound and picture quality may vary'
In saying all that - this film is definitely for the Sci-fi buffs out there, a good story but poorly delivered, a shame really as I believe that if done correctly it could have been a film which would have stood out. It did start a lot of the invasion films around that time. If you are a collector of Science Fiction films it's something that should be collected, but wouldn't be the best in your collection..... I would recommend you watch it for novelty value, but I wouldn't recommend you buy.
The stars in the film:- Howard Keel ; Janette Scott ; Kieron Moore ; Nicole Maurey ; Mervyn Johns ; Carole Ann Ford ; Geoffrey Matthews ; Gilgi Hauser ; Janina Faye

After a deadly shower of meteorites causes almost all the population of the world to go blind, things get worse when a species of human-eating plant, the Triffids who seem to come from space, turn into huge monsters, and begin an assault on the whole human race.
Howard Keel stars as a man recovering from an eye-operation, who thankfully didn't get hurt by the meteorites. He's barely recognisable though, ... ...to grips with not only the fact that most of the world is literally in a blind panic but he also has to deal with the horrible carnivorous plants as well! He eventually decides to basically look after himself and a little girl he saves along the way. The story also follows a sub-plot of a disillusioned couple living in a lighthouse, stranded, and surrounded by deadly Triffids! Advantages: British (and proud) Disadvantages: Low budget hampers things
Based on the John Wyndham book, The Day of The Triffids is a typically British sci-fi b-movie that is just streets ahead of it's American peers.
The story is simple, a seamen recovers from an eye operation, missing a brilliant light show caused by meteors hitting the Earth's atmosphere. When he awakes, the world is in ruin with the population blinded by the strange lights. But this is not the only effect - strange meat eating plants have appeared ... ...pure cheese and even though the film is not going to win any Oscars, it is entertaining. The tension builds well and the underlying story is of such quality that it lifts things tremendously. The cast is suprisingly headed by manly Howard Keel (yes, he of Seven Brides fame) but he's almost the token American as the rest of the cast are well and truly British. Janina Faye as the young girl he befriends continues the good work she did in Hammer's Dracula ...

Advantages: Great Sci Fi Disadvantages: Makes you see plants in a new light
The Day Of The Triffids - a wonderful story by John Wyndham made into a film for the big screen has also been shown on TV.
The Triffid, a plant originally bred for it's oil, became a curiosity as a carniverous plant. It was held captive in secure compounds as it had aquired the ability to move from place to place, albeit slowly. It had a long lash with a lethal sting on the end with which it attacked it's prey, soon to be man and beast. The Triffid ... ...their seeds and unknown to the people the seeds had spread far and wide.
A brilliant and prolonged meteor shower had everyone watching with awe. The next day all who watched woke up blind. The remaining few became targets of the blind to be used as sighted slaves. With no keepers the Triffids were free to leave their compounds and wreaked havoc on the blind population.
The story tells of man's fight against blindness and the marauding Triffids ...

Advantages: Works around its limitations, gripping story Disadvantages: The short episodes are a little irritating
This review refers specifically to the 1981 BBC adaptation of John Wyndham's novel, rather than the 1962 film. In the early 80s when I was tiny, I had to go to bed before nine o'clock. For a few weeks, this meant I could be terrified by strange creatures stalking my tv screen, but never the resolution. The fact I had to watch on a small black and white tv because the main set was designated to Coronation Street merely highlighted the scariness of the experience. Welcome to the Day of the Triffids!
First of all, a little background about Wyndham's original story first published in 1951. The Day of the Triffids tells the story of Bill Masen, following a natural disaster and the devastating effect it has on the earth's population. For reasons that gradually become apparent, Masen has escaped the fate of the majority of the human race ...
Advantages: True to the book, good for its age Disadvantages: Bit silly, jittery
It took me a while, but this year (2007) I finally got around to reading 'Day of the Triffids.' And having enjoyed this fifties John Wyndham book immensely, it was inevitable that I would quickly wish to seek out the old TV series. I do find it quite strange that this, and an 1962 film starring Howard Keel, are the only celluloid versions of this book, though! I wonder why there has been no up-to-date remake of this classic. Ah, what Danny Boyle would do this this!
Directed by Ken Hannam, and made in 1981, the TV series in question stars John Duttine as the lead role of Bill Mason who has since gone on to star in the Casualty (hasn't everyone though?) and Heartbeat. Emma Relph is Jo Payton, who has done little TV. Others actors include Maurice Colebourne and Jonathan Newth. And check out a young John Benfield.
Sometimes, though ...
John Wyndham's classic sci-fi tale which tells of bright lights in the sky, the whole human race blind and helpless and flesh-eating plants stalking the survivors.
A meteor shower disrupts the earth's ecosystem, blinds all who observed it and awakens meat-eating plants. As the hungry foliage grow ever faster, a sighted sailor and an alcoholic scientist help save humanity from becoming plant food. Script originally credited to Phillip Yordan, who acted as a blacklist-era "front" for Gordon.
